Hey guys,

As this post implies, i'm working on an idea for unit combat which doesn't involve rolling x amount of dice.

I've been playing alot of Attack Wing games recently, which are immense fun, but attacks can sometimes vary from rolling 2 crits and 4 hits, to rolling blank results on all dice. This takes away from the enjoyment of the game, as I'm playing myself into a favorable position, but inferior dice rolls cost me the game.

As in these games you have an inevitable conclusion at the end of the allotted time, you could theoretically design a deck of attack moves for your characters.

For example, 10 cards which you pre-construct as your arsenal of moves you have access to in during the course of the game. The moves have exact hit values, which would always do the same amount of damage in ideal conditions (before armor reductions, or reactionary moves).

Each character would then have a certain amount of points to spend on its attack deck, and different moves could cost more. Like a group of attack moves you have taught your characters.

Advanced characters may have more points to spend, whereas characters with proficiency in a certain weapon are allowed to perform moves that other characters cannot. Obviously it would take a fair amount of playtesting.

Any input or ideas are welcome.

Has anyone encountered something similar?

Epic PVP

I would strongly recommend you have a look at Epic PVP. It was successfully Kickstarted last year, and is now in retail. Players select their decks of cards based on race and class. It's highly-abstracted and based on attacks, not on positioning.

Here's critique/info on BGG:

This game may be a fairly-useful jumping-off point for you. Good luck! :)
