One of the main criticisms I've received about Lords of Baseball is that it is doubtful someone will be able to read the rules and understand gameplay. Obviously for something like this I'm way too far into the forest to see the trees. I've had some publishers look at them and reassure me that this is something we can adjust - but when I pitch to others I'd like to be as close as possible.

The PDF is over 1 MB so I can't upload it here. You can click here to go to the rules download section on BGG. Download and read version 6.0 and please let me know if it flows/makes sense.

Can you pinpoint what was overwhelming? Just the sheer amount of "stuff"?

While a lot of the language

While a lot of the language was pretty clear & effective at explaining different rule sets, I did have a bit of trouble getting a full feel for the game. Here are a few observations:

The thing that strikes me the most is that I get tossed into the core game rules without really having had a chance to get my bearings. I start to hear about how to play cards and hidden information without having a general idea what any of that means. Do I have a hand? A deck? Is there a board I'm playing these on? How many people can play the game? It feels like I'm trying to put together pieces of a puzzle without any idea what it's a picture of. I think a broad strokes game overview & maybe a set-up section should be front and center.

Also, I found that it's difficult to find some information. For instance, in 2.2 - you mention the OPS number. It sounds important, but I have no idea what it is, and while it says "OPS actions are described throughout these rules," there's nowhere I can actually look it up - no entry in the glossary nor the TOC.

A little bit stronger organization could be a big help too. For example, you have section 2.1 entirely about Game Length & Phases, and although you talk about the length of a year, you don't actually define the term 'Game Year' until a later section, 2.2.1. If you define 'game year' clearly in 2.1, you won't need to clarify it later (clearing up the other sections a bit), and the reader will be able to find it easily if they need to look it up.

Hope that's helpful!
