Pretty Dice for the Sake of Pretty Dice?

I'm working on a game called Mecha Mayhem in which players build robots and then duke it out in a last-man-standing. Each mech part can be red, blue, yellow or green and it is the predominant colour which sets the overall colour of the mech.

Each colour has a specific bonus which comes in handy in the battling. Also, it determines the number of dice you use when battling. For example: A mech that is determined to be yellow battles with one dice per yellow part. This can be anywhere from 1 to 4 dice.

Now, the dice-lover inside me wants to put 16 dice in the game, with 4 for each colour. This would add to the feel of the game and make it look for appealing, but would it be unnecessary? Should I just put 4 dice in and leave it at that? From what I can tell, the box will be able to fit the components whether I go with 4 or 16 dice. But an extra 12 dice for the sake of looking cool would drive up the price that little bit more.

Would you guys prefer it with or without coloured dice?

Stick with one set of dice

Stick with one set of dice unless there is some need for more. Unless you are fantasy flight, people hesitate to spend a larger amount of money on a game. A smaller price tag is generally a better option*.

Unless you can justify the need of 12 extra dice... I wouldn't raise the price.

* Miniatures or extremely high-quality components can be an exception. People will pay boatloads for that kind of pretty.

Are they standard d6s? Are

Are they standard d6s? Are they custom dice? Are they blank colored dice with stickers?

If colored dice serve different functions (i.e., red dice have different symbols than yellow dice), then I think you need to have 4 of each color. If all dice are identical, mechanically, then you do not need colored dice at all. If they are identical and all normal d6s, then just put 4 dice in. If they are identical and custom dice/blanks with stickers, go ahead and put 8 in so each player has as set.

I like dice too. :)

My Weakness!

Thanks guys. :)

It's just D6s (as stands, playtests might change that) so right now I suppose I'll just have the 4. It's quite the weakness of mine to like an army of dice!

I never could have guessed by your profile picture. ;)

I, too, have those 6 dice regularly in a row!

i... really like custom dice...

I wish I could encourage you to go with lots of coloured dice, but that's just enabling a frivolous idea I suppose >_<;

You probably already have your answer, but unless they were custom dice, there's really no need for it.

In saying that, I think that if you have an opportunity to design custom dice thematically into your game, you should consider it! As long as you can keep the number of dice at four, people love custom dice! They're so much fun!

Full disclosure; custom dice can sell me on a game if the theme is strong enough. That feels embarrassing to admit somehow on a board game design forum. -_-;

Euphoria: Build a better

Euphoria: Build a better dystopia did the custom and color coded d6's but it was because the dice were all needed.

I think if people do something more with the dice than just take turns rolling them it would be fine...otherwise i wouldnt to save $$.

If you do a kickstarter, maybe have them be stretch goals?

Is there combat with

Is there combat with competitive dice rolling? Where more than one person needs to roll?

Not so much about the quantity of the dice, but there is something about having dice that are yours in a game that enhances the sense of immersion.

It's 2-5 players and combat

It's 2-5 players and combat is 1v1 so at all times in battling there'll be 2 people rolling with each rolling 1-4 dice, so upon reflection I think 8 will be the minimum.

I'm currently trying to balance the scoring/stats of the different colours so they each have their own 'feel' without being OP'd, so there's a chance this will happen with modified dice. So right now I think I'm between 8 and 16 dice, depending how it goes. :P
