What to do about "tournament" gameplay

I have the chance to PONDER more deeply about the format of "Monster Keep" (MK). Specifically the FORMAT of the current game. Currently I am planning to offer TWO (2) retail box formats:

1. A two (2) player duel box which has enough cards for two (2) players. It's a "core" product featuring all that is necessary for duels.

2. A four (4) player versus box which contains cards for four (4) players. It's also a "core" product but has added card count for versus play.

While this is COOL to help "promote" the "GAME VIBE" (ie. it's a GAME versus a random set of cards). You can choose how many players you want to buy the game for. Since the game supports either 2 or 4 players, it's natural from a game perspective to offer these formats. BUT...

Here's the real deal. If I wanted to hold a TOURNAMENT for say 1,000 players. Something officially promoted...

Question: How do I SELL the game (during the tournament)?

See in tournaments, each player needs their OWN cards AND their OWN pouch and their OWN parts. And usually when you attend a "tournament", you either bring your own cards (BAD) or buy ones for the event (AMAZING).

It makes 100% sense to BUY-IN and get a deck. That's okay.

The REAL problem is the POUCH and PARTS.

Fundamentally EACH PLAYER having his OWN Deck is 100% acceptable. But this leads to having his/her own POUCH and PARTS. If you want to have people PLAYING in a SOLO "tournament" with a PRIZE (TBD), you need to have a FORMAT which can be used to SELL "kits" (so-to-speak).

So let's say we thought about this SOME MORE and came up with:

+ 12 "core" cards to a player's Micro Deck
+ 1 Nexus card (required by each game)
+ 1 Material pouch
+ 24 Wooden cubes
+ 3 custom dice (d6s)

This is PER Player. Obviously this all LOOKS great and logical... BUT!

The problem is back to our 2 and 4 Player Boxes. Doing 2x and 4x a "kit" is expensive. It increases the cost of the Boxes because of the multiple Material pouches and the EXTRA Wooden cubes.

Okay so for a 2 Player duel, it's ONLY 1 extra Material pouch and 24 additional Wooden cubes.

For the 2 Player duel Box this is NOT a problem as there were supposed to be 48 Wooden cubes. The ONLY extra is another Material pouch ($0.80). It's not too bad... a slight increase in costs.

However for the 4 Player versus Box ... This is 96 Wooden cubes and 4 Material pouches. OUCH! That's a lot of EXTRA. And to me, it seems like this puts a PRICE on the "premium" 4 player game. How much??? I'm not certain just YET. But it is clear that it's about "$2.40 + $4.32" = $6.72... That's the COST increase! Fnck that's A LOT.

Anyone have a suggestion or another way of looking at things???

I'm feeling the BIG HEAT with a $6+ cost increase... That's HUGE when you think about production costs.

Maybe I should forget the 4 Player versus Game ... And focus ONLY on the 2 Player Box and SOLO packages during tournaments.

I know it shouldn't be the focus of the game (some very vague tournament that could or does not occur)... But it all becomes the point of PLANNING and seeing what the future may hold. No preparation means NO POSSIBILITY. There could potentially be a "tournament" ... Who knows (ATM).

Thoughts, ideas, feedback???

Can't you sell it as add-on?

So players can get the 2 player version. And decide later to get the add-on?

Hmm... Not sure YET

The idea is that you CAN get the 2 player version... Which would be like getting 2x "1 SOLO" set... Same amount of PARTS. So the 2 player version is like a "core" purchase of "A GAME". And nearly the same price too...

The add-on you speak of... Is this for 4 players???

Each add-on should add what is needed for the next tier of number of players.

If players start with a 1 player set. Then have them get what they need for 2 players in the add-on. Which is, what you described as 2 x the 1 player set.

Does this mean that a 4 player set needs 4x the 1 player set? If not, have the add-on, everything a player needs for 4 players. This might be a 2 player set with any extras they need. Or only the extras and simply telling the players to have 4x the single player set.

I am not good with commercial stuff. So I don't know how players would react to something like this.

I simply got reminded of the booster sets form MtG. Where some players choose to get boosters only, without the basic sets.

Ah I see your point now!

I understand. That leads me to believe that 1 Player stuff should be available for players who play on their own "competitively" during weekly battles.

No it's good. I mean it makes me think 1 Player and 2 Player "kits". If you want to play "4 Players Versus" well then you would need 2x 2 Player Kit...! Makes sense to me. How many people will BUY this option??? This I don't know... But it makes it much simpler to do something like this.

Yeah ... Like I'm not doing boosters but at the same time, I don't want to up the price of ONE 4 Player Kit by $6+ just to allow for the extra content and players. Makes it an easier decision to see if people want to buy the extra "kit" or not.

Makes sense ... Thanks you helped me a lot with this one!

I did?

I had one more other thing in mind...
But I think, only someone with good economics can confirm this.

If the 2 sets that players need cost 2 and 6. Why not change it into 3 and 5?
3 is still cheap, you earn the money for the add-on earlier too. Even if players don't buy it. And the add-on looks relatively cheaper.

Play with the numbers a bit. Make sure you take a good look at the price and demand ratio. Combine this with the add-on demand.
