Hockey board game

I've been mulling over a new game in my head and wasn't sure if there is anything like it. Are there any team sports board games on the market, i.e.: Soccer (Football), Baseball or Hockey?

My (2-player) hockey game that I'm thinking of will be based on a hex grid pattern overlaid over the ice surface. I'm playing around with some ideas regarding shooting, passing, goal tending, etc... What I can't seem to wrap my head around is how to move the players in an organic manner.

Is there a way to move them all "at once"? In real-life, everyone on the ice moves at the same time (duh), but how can I translate that to a board game.

As it stands now, I'm thinking that each on-ice player (except the goalie) has a movement phase and an action phase. Movement can be a limited number of spaces that they are allowed to move, while actions range from passing, shooting, skating (extra movement), stick handling (trying to avoid an adjacent opponent), etc... Each action taken will result in moving a Stamina Marker down it's respective scale, until stamina is depleted and the team needs to make a line change to bring on fresh skaters. Having no or negative stamina will result in a lowered ability to complete actions effectively.

Back to movement...Would it work by having each player move their hockey players one at a time, one after the other? That seems to laborious to me. There must be another way.

Any ideas?

Action points

You could use "Action Points" like a player has 10 APs per turn:

1. The cost to move the player with the puck costs 3 APs.
2. Passing a puck costs 2 APs.
3. Moving a Forward costs 2 APs.
4. Moving a Defenseman costs only 1 APs.
5. Taking a shot on goal costs 2 APs.

You could also have an "action deck" of cards with things like a "Slap Shot" 3 APs but you need to roll a lower dice amount for a goal. Or a "One Timer" takes 2 APs.

There are so many possibilities...

You could have "Penalties", "Fights", "Four on Four" overtime, "Shoot outs". There is a LOT you can do with a Hockey game...

One thing, instead of a Hex board, I would go with something like a Warhammer game: use a ruler to measure how far a player can move.

Players "in the way" of a pass can *intercept* a pass or *block* a shot, etc... Like an action card could be "Slide" to block a shot on goal... Man to man coverage would be necessary to stop an easy goal.

Note: You action *hand* could be like five (5) cards from a deck with PLENTY of duplicate cards. You could balance the deck, for example you could have 10 "intercept" a pass cards and maybe only 2 "Fight" cards... Some kind of balance where the cards match the actual times they occur in a game.

When you reach the bottom of the action deck, the period ends... Something like that!

Star Wars X wing has a mechanic like this. Lock in your move then wait for everyone else. Everyone then moves at once

QuestCCG, a lot of what you mentioned is what I've been thinking about. Like, having a player steal a pass if he's between the two players.
I also like the idea of having a hand of action cards.
As I've never played Warhammer, I'm not too familiar with that mechanic of movement but I've seen it done and I thought I'd like to "simplify it a little by restraining the hockey players to preset movement spaces.

My problem still resides in not knowing how to have a turn happen as realistic as possible without getting very monotonous (my move, your move, my move, your move, etc..).

Player movement

Like the idea of a hockey game played on a hex map. Have you thought about using a proximity initiative to see which players move first. The way i see it happening is closest to the puck moves first and then each player in a circle (expanding out from the puck) then moves in turn kind of like reacting to the puck or the player with the puck until each player moves. Then decide to pass, shoot ect. Then start over. This way the puck generates the action and the defence can react to the player with the puck and so on. Hope this helps.
