Not sure if this is a mechanics question or a prototyping question. Sorry if it is mis-categorized. I am looking for a money tracking system that helps with creating tension as the money dwindles down. I found at least one thread on a similar subject, but it was focused on separate player amounts. In my game about the Revolutionary War, the money situation is communal (a war chest)...everyone draws from it. However, I need something easy to constantly manipulate as each player "draws from the account" and also helps to create tension as it works its way to zero. If it reaches zero...game over...a loss.

I have definitely settled on a track arrangement over individual currency (paper, tokens, chits, etc.). What do think about putting a track around the perimeter of the board like a victory point track would normally be? What else? What other ways to track money are out there?

Thanks in advance for the responses.

I take it this is a cooperative style game?

What do you mean by you need something easy to constantly manipulate?
Have a cool wooden chest and fill it with plastic coins!
tension builds as the chest empties.

I agree that literally

I agree that literally emptying the war chest seems like the best mechanic.

Hmmm...didn't think of that

The game is cooperative. The constant manipulation refers to the fact that there are replenishment phases and events that may add back as well. I am working in an "inflation" mechanic as well--forcing them to spend more in subsequent rounds for the same resources.

I will think more on the war chest idea. That was a good one.

Money Changer

You could use something like a money changer with a single column of coins for each coin type (or chits representing coins), which pop out with the push of a button. Clear tubes would show the diminishing amount available.

Use a track

I think that the track around the entire board sounds like it works fine. Actually having coins or chips or bills to keep track of is just another part to make and to lose. Also, it's less obvious how much is left, compared to seeing the track, especially if you color code it so that the last part of the track feels really dangerous.

money track around the board

Okay... good points, Zag. Using the theme, there were many different currencies at the time... they could make up the track... and the really dangerous part is when the last 10 or so ride over the British flag.
