Hi all,

Since I posted up the NEW RPS-9 I plan to use (http://www.bgdf.com/forum/game-creation/mechanics/rps-9-yes-or-no)

I was wondering if we have any Fans of Pokemon.

I know Pokemon uses a RPS-17 (which is even MORE complicated) and what I wanted to know is how do they (Pokemon) allow players to know which cards battle better against their opponents.

Like I said, it's a RPS-17 so players can't possibly remember the RPS-17 chart which looks like this: http://www.bgdf.com/image/pokemon-guide

Many thanks!

Been searching

I have been looking at various Pokemon cards and from the cards themselves, there does not seem to be a direct indicator that describes any RPS-17 rules... This is a little bit discouraging since I cannot figure out how those rules actually "exist" in the game (on the cards)!

If I recall correctly, on the

If I recall correctly, on the bottom of a given Pokémon card, there should be a 'Weak to X' symbol, and a corresponding value. That value is added to attack types that its weak to. The RPS system differs between the video game and the card game too.

Thanks for pointing that out!

Thanks Squinshee. What I have found is two (2) different symbols:

  1. Weakness, a multiplier (like 1x or 2x) or a modifier (like +20 Fire)
  2. Resistance, a modifier (like -20 Water).

I have not seen a multiplier for Resistance... I have been searching the Pokemon database - and have found none YET.

Sometimes there can also be more than one (1) symbol...

Note: I am more interested in the TCG (as opposed to the Video Game rules).

I am trying to see if...

Maybe I can use something similar for the dual RPS systems (or the hybrid RPS-9).

  • First thing I know is that Weak x2 is the Red arrows in my RPS-9.
  • Each race has one (1) of these 2x (double damage) weaknesses.
  • The Weak x1 is the Black arrows going to a race. There should be two (2) of these per race.
  • That means three (3) Weak colours.
  • Each race has one (1) of these 2x (double damage) strengths.
  • The Strong x1 is the Black arrow leaving a race. There should be two (2) of these per race.
  • That means three (3) Strong colours.

If the colour is in neither the Weakness or Strength, it means the Blue arrows (attack & defend). Those are 1:1 where both parties are battling...

So this means six (6) colours per unit (3 and 3)! Not too much... Just enough if you ask me. :)

New possibilities

By looking at Pokemon, this opens up NEW possibilities I had not thought of.

Maybe NOT all units will have 2x Weakness or a 2x Strength.

They could also have bonuses like -X or +X. So some units may be less powerful in their bonuses (as opposed to 2x)...

I have to think some more about this (and how it will affect the game). But at first glance this should be possible.
