Since the first draft of the rules are available here http://www.bgdf.com/node/5396 and I got a great idea from Alex on how to make the game cost effective. What do you all think of the Bragging Mechanic? Is there anything I could do to make that more elegant? Does it fit the theme / setting for the game? How do the rules look in general? Any other advice / questions / comments / criticisms?

Bragging will easily translate into Points in most players minds...

Good / Bad

So are you saying that's good or bad?

Also are you interested in doing some sci-fi art for the game?

Definition of "better" brag

One thing I wasn't clear on by reading the rules was what makes a "better" brag.
The example helps, but still leaves it unclear.
- 2d8 to 2d6 reduces the dice size, which is obvious enough.
- 2d6 to 1d12 reduces dice count but increases dice size, which causes my confusion.

Could Coop have instead bragged 1d20, which still reduces dice count but increases dice size?
Likewise, technically by the rules Dash could have bragged 4d10, because it reduces dice size.

Munchkinism aside, as I understand it the intent of the "better brag" rule is more like: "Each brag must be better (that is, lower) than the previous. Multiply the dice by the sides (so 2d6=12 is better than 2d8=16). On a tie, the lower number of dice is better (so 1d12=12 is better than 2d6=12)."
Is that right?

As an aside, I agree with the previous poster that "boast" fits better than "brag".
(Further aside, it immediately reminded me of the Clans in Battletech.)

Regards,
kos

1. Its neither good or bad... players will get that its part of the theme, Japanese designers do it all the time. Take the case of Cardfight! Vanguard, the name of the discard pile is called "the Drop" besides having a name called the drop its no different from being called the discard pile, graveyard, cemetary, etc... at that point it becomes more of a theme as opposed to a "True Mechanic" life "IF" or "Triggers", "Activated", "Global", "Continuous", and so forth... Players in their mind will often see that it is something basic so with bragging it would be points, so if you wrote on a card, "while you have X brags you can..." the players will convert the word brags or bragging to Points.

2. I can try but I cant make any promises, what kind of deadline and art style are you looking for?

I understand your confusion Kos. I'm going to add a list showing the Boasts from top to bottom in the rules, like this:

5d12

5d6
4d12
4d10
4d8
4d6
3d12
3d10
3d8
3d6
2d12
2d10
2d8
2d6
1d12
1d10

Art Style

JaffetC thanks for the feedback.
The art style I was imagining would be gritty sci-fi (if that's a style). I think your water color work would reflect this well. I would need approximately 55 pieces for the card art plus box and common card back art.
Please email me at levimote@bonsaigames.net if you're interested and we can discuss the payment details.
