I want to know what people think of this rough idea I threw together. The idea is to make something new and strange in the worker placement genre, and a little to cater toward a younger audience (like kids age 6-10 - this goal is far less important if the game is good)

any input appreciated!

thanks,

The idea looks okay but if

The idea looks okay but if you are aiming at young kids you made a mistake. There is too many complicated rules and calculations. Also, I think the option to kill an elephant does not belong in a game for kids.

If I do peruse the"for kids " route I would obviously re flavor killing elephants to some other form of permanent removal. The mechanics are not THAT complicated, I have tested with my 5,6,and 8 year olds and they have done fine with it. Which mechanics seem too difficult for kids to you? I would likely aim for ages 5+ if I pursue a kid friendly game. I have 4 kids and my 3 year old did not enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback

I don't seem to have access

I don't seem to have access anymore, so I had to request it again. I'll get into details once I have the rules before me.

That said, I saw a whole lot of options during your turn and I thought that it would bore kids, especially those with analysis paralysis. Also, you have to count out hit points, coins and other things and while kids can manage it just fine, they might not see it as enjoyable.

I would test with loads of different kids to make sure your own kids were a representative set of testers. After all, with a game designing parent like you, they might be pre-disposed to like games and let's be honest, they're probably not going to bash a game that mom/dad made.
