Fighting game dice game

After seeing games like Zombie Dice, Cthulhu Dice and a few others, i started thinking about themed dice games myself. Came up with this idea inspired by games like street fighter, wanna see what you guys think of it.

Each player has 5 dice. All dice have two faces with fists on them (punches), two faces with feet on them (kicks) and two faces with Bam! symbols on them (combo points).

Each player begins with ten health points. Turns happen simultaneously, with each player rolling their dice but keeping the results hidden. They may re-roll up to three dice. Both players then compare dice results;the person with the longest string of punches or kicks hits. For example:Player one's result is two punches, two kicks and one combo point. Player two's result is 3 kicks and 2 combo points. Player two is the one that hits, because her kick string was longer than her opponents punch or kick string. You cannot string punches and kicks together. A hit does one damage.
Then, the player that hit takes the amount of combo dice in their role, and adds that to the damage they do. So player two in the example would add two, and do 3 damage overall.
If there is a tie, the player with the most combo points in their result hits. If that is a tie as well, players re-roll.
If a player has an entire row of combo points, they do an automatic 3 damage unless the opponent also has that result. In this case players re-roll.
If you lose all your health points, you lose the round. Best two out of three rounds to win the game.

So yes, it's (purposefully) simple and there's lots of luck. But there is strategy in choosing between going for extra damage or going for a dependably long string or something in between. At some points in the game it may be better to simply be defensive and chip at your opponent, and other times it'd be better to try to deal heavy damage. And of course you always have to deal with what you were dealt, rolling closer to whatever your strategy would be. I think it could be a fun and fast-paced, mostly luck with a little tactics kinda game.

Love it!

Hey clockwork! I think that idea sounds excellent!!! I have always been a big fan of the Street Fighter genre, and I'd love to help you beta test the game if to get it made!

Heya Clockwork, Yes I would

Heya Clockwork,

Yes I would agree King of tokyo sounds like something that you could really get some great ideas from.

Just as an idea though, the game sounds great :)

I would actually (in this case) encourage you to almost do the same dice mechanic as king of tokyo: you can basically reroll 3 dice, then 2, then 1 - it makes you feel as though you are ggeting "a load of free goes" which is really nice. I would have to insist that you have some more symbols on their, perhaps one could be "special move" and then you collect special move points up as eurocubes. Then once you have drawn an awesome card, say "Hiyuken" it does like 6 damage but requires 7 special move points.

This is essentially exactly how king of tokyo works, but it is a great great game and I would love a game that works in a similar fashion to it - you would probably get a load of fans for free as well, in the "its like king of tokyo" front.

but of course you would need to add / jig / change / remove a few things to really make it your game.

tl;dr play king of tokyo and put a few more elements into your game and I would happily buy it :)

Well, the games that inspired

Well, the games that inspired my original idea are incredibly simple, but this King of Tokyo game looks really fun.

I think i could probably use my original idea as a launching point to make something a bit more complex, taking inspiration from King of Tokyo. I'll try to see if i can find it anywhere local.

Dice only games

I finished my own 'dice only' game a couple of years ago - it was a hoot to design! I'd always wanted to design a game using only dice as the 'bits' - it was quite a challenge.

The way I approached it was to find a collectible dice game that had gone out of print that had cool icons I could turn into something completely different. The basic idea was to NOT read the rules to the original game and create something original. There are half a dozen collectible dice games out there that fit the bill.

Check this GEEK LIST here-

boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/3047/collectable-dice-games-cdgs

You'll find lots of CDGs here [almost all of which are 'Dead, Jim']. Go to ebay and look up '[insert name of Dice Game] lot' and you'll find bunches of whichever looks cool to you. These are MUCH easier [and fun] to work with, because you don't have to spend oodles of time creating prototypes. If you're REALLY serious about doing your own dice for production, after you've got your rules clarified and your playtesting completed, it's a simple matter of mapping the dice out and substituting your own symbols to submit to a manufacturer.

You might even get lucky and find TONS of the discontinued dice and simply recycle them to publish your own game which is what I did with my own COMBAT LINES [you can see the finished product here - terrangames.us/p/combat-lines.html]. I based mine on the old CHAOS PROGENITUS/DEMON DICE.

Some of the CDGs are very intricate, some are fairly basic [I chose a basic].

Based on what you are describing, I have some dice that have basically what you're looking for [a 'spike' symbol, a 'pow' symbol and another 'pow' symbol with a hole in it] that would adapt easily to what you are working on that I would be happy to send to you for the price of postage [I have lots of extras].

Bottom line - dice only games are a hoot! All the portability of card games plus rolling dice! What's not to like?! Go for it!

Custom Dice

Re: Traz's post, I think that method of finding out of print dice games was brilliant a few years ago. As of a few weeks ago, The Game Crafter has custom dice. They are blank dice with stickers that the buyer has to apply, which is not perfect, but pretty great. I have yet to see them in person, but I expect a high quality to fit their other product parts that I have seen.

So, you are now able to put ANY design you like on a die, and they have like 6 different colors of dice too.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

Go BOB!

That's an awesome alternative that wasn't available just a few years ago, Bob - thanks for the heads up!

For the record - I got extremely high quality LASER CUT dice at a reasonable price from BLUE PANTHER for my EXPRESS LINE game some years back and he still offers the service [seriously - check EXPRESS LINE on BGG, there are very good close up photos that'll knock your socks off].

For PRODUCTION purposes, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest either of these two guys.

My suggestion was more for PROTOTYPE purposes. You might not want to spend that much on prototypes as you go through the changes of design and development. At worst, you can always sell back what you bought for much the same you paid on ebay [hmmm... 'renting' prototype dice... there's a concept!]

My good fortune at the CHAOS PROGENITUS dice becoming my production pieces was strictly a fluke - I doubt if anybody else would be that lucky. I also face the problem of MY GAME going out of print once I can no longer obtain these dice [there's a thought - my new game using out of print collectible dice going out of print because I can't get the out of print dice any more...]. But then, I don't expect to sell large quantities of COMBAT LINES. It's a specialty item with a narrow appeal - I get that.

I certainly wouldn't suggest my method for production purposes - but I won't hesitate to suggest it for prototypes.
