Hey all, I'm a long time gamer first time designer and I am currently working on designing a fishing game. It's far from a simulation, more fantasy in theme. The board has several locations players can choose to move to (depending on whether they have the proper boat upgrades). I'm trying to decide if I should make them bodies of water, or let some theme take over and make one an acid lake, one a volcano, etc. This seems like it would be a little more fun as the mechanic is each location has a deck of cards and if you draw a fish card you have to roll "cast dice" to catch the fish. With equipment bonuses and sabotage cards I think it is going to be a blast. Please let me know what you all think! Currently I am designing the fish and equipment so I can make a low level prototype to test out the mechanic. The design has already changed several times from my original idea which I've heard is common. Thanks for any and all opinions and suggestions and hopefully I will have a playtest available soon!

Sounds like it could be a fun

Sounds like it could be a fun game, however I'm not sure how you would incorporate the fantasy theme. I'm actually in a similar situation, I began building a strategy and city building game, with all these crazy fantasy theme ideas in my mind, but the more I work on the game, the more it seems like a more simple theme would make more sense. I guess it really depends on how you implement it. The theme should match the game. Personally, I've spent many an hour fishing in Animal Crossing and that is about as simple as it can get!

That game is soooo simple and yet so freakin' addicting. Why is it so addicting to go around fish, shake down apples from trees and sell them or donate them? Why?

I have no idea!! But I loved

I have no idea!! But I loved every minute of it. It is proof that simplicity works.
There are lots of simple yet addicting games..I mean, Tetris? Come on!

Magnets, how do they work.

I always got frustrated with my wife when she would find a new fossil, and then sell it. NOOOOO!!!!! You must donate all the fossils!!! She's really good at fishing though and also donating the fish. I think she's gotten most of the fish in the museum.

The original mario and Sonic games were super simplistic as well. To kill the baddies, you jump on top of them (or just jump for sonic as long as there weren't spikes etc). One of the best games out there though that is super simplistic is Ticket to Ride. That game is so simple it's to die for!
