Came up with this idea a few days ago. Here is my brainstorm. Feel free to help out.

-Add cards to your deck to build character. Mostly skills and feat-like things in the deck. So you might draw "Sprint" or "Sing".
-All "characters" are considered to have the same attributes, so the entire character is defined by the cards in it's deck.
-The DM (Deck Master) will have her own special deck with events or something in it. These events will help guide the play session and allow her to score points somehow by completing them.
-The players can also score points somehow by using their cards.
-Players can take any action on their turns. The cards in their hand just help describe what they can do well. So the cards would just give a bonus to their roll or something.

The main things I'm trying to figure out are:
-how does the game end?
-how do the players and DM score points in a fair and balanced way?

Thanks for any input.

-How do characters gain cards

-How do characters gain cards into their decks?
-Does everyone start with the same beginning deck?
-Are points the primary goal of the game? Doesn't feel very RPG-like if it's a victory point game.
-So the DM is playing similarly to everyone else (for points)? Seems like they could easily push the game into their favor.
-If you want a DM-like aspect to the game, why not just have a draw pile of Event cards that are drawn at certain times?
-Is this a cooperative, or competitive game? Many RPG's are co-op, but the point system makes me think it's competitive.
-Perhaps have a soft timer to end the game (e.g., an END card shuffled into the bottom 10 cards of a certain deck) or a who-gets-x-points-first.

-Some possibilities of ways to earn points: Defeat monsters, Finish missions, Challenge another player, Raise creatures, Complete certain "achievements" (e.g., cast 20 spells), Complete certain goals dictated by the DM deck.

I haven't thought about many

I haven't thought about many details yet. Just posted the idea here because it seems like a good project. The players would probably start with the same deck and they would collect experience or something in order to purchase new cards.

It's not exactly an RPG. It's got RPG elements but also has a defined goal and victor. Somehow the DM is also playing. The DM's role would obviously be different and would need its own way to score points. The even card deck is basically what I was thinking, but I would like the DM to have some control over what happens by buying cards for the event deck with points or something.

This game would be competitive co-op. So the players have to work together but are also trying to score more points than each other.

I'm trying to think of a cooler mechanic for point scoring.

My first thoughts for the game were to have it be very rules light but this wont work if players are competing with each other. With more structure, it will be easier to create a victory point scoring mechanic.

What about letting players purchase event cards to use against other players?

Rob, Sara, and Tim are all playing, going about their normal paths and defeating monsters, etc. Rob and Sara see that Tim has a fair lead against them, so Rob purchases an Event card to use against Tim. Tim reveals the card and sees that he has to overcome a big obstacle now (his hometown is under attack, he encountered a dragon horde, he lost a limb, etc.).

It just feels to me like having a DM would negate the need for event cards, and vice-versa. I'm not sure how you plan to combine the two together in a fun way.

I like that idea a lot.

I like that idea a lot. Everybody controls a PC and can play event cards to control the story. This seems better than having a designated DM. It will also be easier to balance the point scoring system after I make it because everybody will be on the same level.

I like the idea of the players being able to target events at each other.
