Help with a Zombie Card Game

Hi!
I have been browsing around the BGDF for about a week with the idea of a Zombie-themed card game. After looking at a few posts (especially a recent one involving "a different zombie game") I knew this would be a good place to ask for some feedback and help on the idea.

The game is for 2 players, one controlling the survivors of the zombie apocalypse (Human Player. or HP for short), and the other controling the living dead (Zombie Player, or ZP for short).

I know that I want to have the HP control about 4-7 survivors, they can find and search locations to gather supplies and equip themselves with weapons and other items. The ZP plays Zombie cards on the survivors, upgrades Zombie cards in play, and overall tries to kill all of the survivors.

I want this game to have little to no reliance on luck as much as possible, so that players have to rely on strategy. I know that most zombie games use dice. I do not want any in this game.

I do have some problems fleshing out the mechanics of the game, and how the game can use all of the card types I am describing without becoming too complex. I hope you guys have good ideas!

Separate Boards

You could have separate HP board and ZP board, keeps track of improvements, weapons, abilities, etc. similar to the World of Warcraft board game.

To add strategy, i'm thinking of little chits moving about a grid board, filled with buildings and such to give hiding places and line of sight.

Thanks!

Thanks for the idea! However, I was thinking of this to be a card game in the style of Mark Chaplin's "Aliens" Card Game (somewhat). However, if I use location cards as a psuedo-game board, I could make a card game that acted somewhat like a board game.

Completely Card Driven

That's an awesome idea. Reminds of Chaotic, where the cards are strategically placed on a game board, and you can equip your guys with battlegear, and you randomly select a location to battle on.

Thanks again!

I've heard of Chaotic, it seemed interesting. Actually, when I was writing my previous post, I was thinking of the Aliens Predator Collectible Card Game from Harper Prism in 1997. It was pretty fun, but somewhat complicated and, (excuse the pun), chaotic. This game I plan on creating removes the randomness factor from all of the games it is inspired by, so players can focus on overwhelming the opponent.

I'll state a little obviousness to start ^_^

Separate Zombie and Human decks are probably a good start.

And I would consider having each side play, kinda like a different game but that affects the other player's actions etc. I would also give serious thought to how each player's goals could be different.

Consider something like this: The human player plays a game kind of like Magic.. You gather survivors 'creatures' you equip them with items and weapons 'permanents', maybe you manage certain resources, like ammo, gas, food or something. The human goal could be to fulfill a list of tasks like, leave the mall, kind the truck, lower the bridge etc. to win.

On the other hand, the zombie player could be playing ah... I dunno, but something different ^_^

Another idea that just came to me (sorry, I tend to write these posts over several minutes between work) would be something a little like the old Star Trek TNG CCG where there are locations set up in a line between the two players, each player playing their cards on their own side of the location cards. Another aspect of the ST ccg that I think would fit well with your theme is how players were trying to complete missions in order to win, and missions would entail moving between locations. You could have the human player on his side trying to complete objectives and the zombie player on the other side trying to prevent completion and even invalidate objectives.

I was thinking of the latter, but...

My current draft of the game rules focuses on mechanics similar to the Star Trek TNG CCG (which is also suprisingly similar to the Aliens/Predator CCG). I was definently going to seperate Human and Zombie Decks, but, like you said, that is obvious.

I like your idea on how the HP should have different missions (find the truck, leave the mall, etc...). At first, the HP had just a simple goal, gather supplies and bring them back to the starting location. Obviously that is too simple. More missions can help make the game more fun and exciting.

Also, instead of having Location Cards set up before play (like the ST CCG), I had them set up during play (like the A/P CCG). However, that might get too complicated, so I'll stick to the ST CCG method.

Thanks!
