card games power.png

I love all the card games such as magic, ygo, pokemon etc so i want to add a bit of elements from all these games into one card game and i think i have a basic idea on the type of game. here is an example image

i know card games are hard to market, but im just using gamecrafter and then playing it at my local card shop with friends. i dont plan to market the game, though it will teach me more about game designing

Sounds like it could be fun.

Sounds like it could be fun. If you aren't selling it, then I won't warn you against trying to sell a CCG :)

I'll still caution you against using the word "power" for two totally different things, though.

Here you go

https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/power

Pick what feels right. And there are 3 tabs above the words. I think you need the second tab. But go through all 3 of them. Who knows what idea's you might get.

I'm currently trying to pursue another contact into sharing her feedback and opinion on this EXACT matter.

Hopefully she responds to my e-mail about meeting to discuss the design!

Cheers...

MTG's Mana Tapping Mechanic

MTG's Mana Tapping Mechanic is Patented, oddly. I was surprised to find this out. You may want to get legal advice before proceeding.

Just to be clear I am not confusing that with Copyrighted. It is actually patented. I had a retail store and discovered this. I purchased some card games for my store from a Distributor. When I wanted more, I was informed that one game was no longer available as the company had legal trouble due to using the Tapping mechanic. The game was basically MTG with World War Two Theme.

There are multiple games that

There are multiple games that use the tap mechanic like dbs. though i have a new idea for my game, it will be different mechanic entirely so ill make a new post.

Dunno if its unique but hopefully not many card games have this system

It WAS patented. It has since expired.

Magic: The Gathering — Trading Card Patent

You can download a COPY of the patent from the link below:

Magic: The Gathering — Trading Card Patent

You can also search for the document on the US Patent Office. I personally have a link to it ... because I found it interesting to have a copy of...

Enjoy!

Note: The ENTIRE patent has expired... Not just "tapping".

20 years is all you get...

The patent is granted to be valid for a period of 14 to 20 years from the initial date of filing. In this case 1995. That means the patent expired in 2015 ... And it is now permissible to use the word "Tapping" to refer to cards being used on your turn. I personally never liked the term, I would rather use the term "Exhaust" and "Exhausting a card" since it means "to use" (literally) ...

As for making the patent available... No problemo. I knew some people would be interested in READING it and seeing what was a part of it. I too personally wanted a copy (sometimes it's hard to find patents on the USPO website...) In any event, the earlier link will work for anyone interested in the document.

Cheers!

Easy answer: Patents don't renew.

Btw, if you want to search for patents:

Not very User Friendly

I offered the Magic Patent LINK/URL because the US Patent Office SEARCH is rather HARD to use unless you know exactly what it is you are looking for.

Like you can use the name: "Garfield" and then search through the 350 records to find the Magic patent. It's under "Trading Card Game"... I believe its around record 200-250 (If my memory serves me right).

Anyhow the LINK I provided it much easier to simple D/L the PDF with all the images and patent related information. You really need to understand what you are doing with the USPO search... It also makes it rather difficult to FIND patents based on claims or that you might be in violation of someone's right to create a patent and have it approved.

The bottom line is: HARD to find stuff in that database.

I'm a huge MTG fan too

I am an MTG addict. I also tried creating a game along the lines of Magic, but with area control instead of kill your opponent. Then Mage Wars came out and I abandoned my idea. If you're looking for outside play testers, I am always eager to test others ideas and this seems right up my alley. Since you're not planning on marketing, you may not be interested in testers, but I figure it doesn't hurt to offer.

Not To Discourage You But...

I would strongly advise against (yet another) MTG-style dueling-wizards-throwing-monsters-at-each-other card game. I think Garfield was on to something when he made NetRunner. The possibilities of a two-player card game are far greater than "play dudes with X attack and Y defense in an attempt to reduce your opponent's life-value (score) to zero!" I implore you to find a theme that isn't "Fantasy (or sci-fi) dudes & monsters attacking and blocking." Please. Do it for me.

For real, if you've played Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh and Hearthstone and any of the other dozens of similar vaguely fantasy themed monster-bashers, I would recommend you then play: Android:NetRunner, Arkham Horror LCG, and Cultist Simulator (digital, Steam).
