Murder Mystery (Uh...Sorta)

Every halloween, I create a murder mystery type game for X number of people (whoever rsvp's). This year I wanted to do something unique but I'm not great at linking things together via clues.

Here are some ideas so far
- Every person who RSVP's will receive a package a few days before the party. The package will contain a security footage of a person being kidnapped but some masked man. It will also contain a encrypted message that is the first clue that they must decode.

- At the party, the guests will be given the instructions and story of what happened. The story will be they will be collaborating with the FBI on this investigation due to their knowledge of the victim or thats what they are told. So there will be simple FBI website they can access. The killer/kidnapper will be among the group so I need to find a way to lead to a solution.

Those are the ideas I have so far but I dont know how to link them all together with clues. I thought about having an Alias on the FBI website for each guest with an unsolved mystery and the guests can then interrogate that person to solve it with a time limit or one of them.

I would like to have a system to kill them off but then allow the dead people to help/join the killer's side.

Any input or ideas would greatly help.

Party

I love these kinds of events!
Remember that this is a party and the purpose of a party is to get people mingling and talking to one another. In that vein, I would suggest that you give each guest a list of 2 - 3 clues and instruct them to come to the party to collaborate with other "Special Investigators" being invited by the FBI. Explain to them that they must tell the truth if asked specifically about the clues they have. After an hour or so, have everyone vote by secret ballot and have a prize for those that figure it out and let that person explain to the others how s/he came to that conclusion. If no one figures it out, have a dramatic reveal explaining everything to the guests.
I hope you have a great Halloween party!!

I do like the classic murder

I do like the classic murder mystery mechanic with everyone having a backstory and clues they can reveal, and clues they must reveal. I wanted to try something new. Possibly something like Ultimate Werewolf but more complicated and customizable involving more mystery instead of point and kill.

That sounds really fun! I

That sounds really fun! I would love to come :D

Last I went ot a murder mystery party: I was the killers lover and I found it enourmous fun role playing bgin madly and secretly (over the top really!) in love with someone. I am quite outgoing and flirty anyway, so really loved the role - if you have people coming that would have fun like that, make them lovers! hehe

I think a warewolf style "Hang the villager, I htink he's the murderer" could be cool? And if the murder gets killed, then it would "trigger" perhaps a sympathizer or a copy cat murderer to take his place?

Maybe the dead people could play as "ghosts" (give them a white sticker or a little face paint) and perhaps the alive people must pretend not to see them. Of course the ghosts could, say, write on a piece of paper or turn a light on and off as if they were ghosts - perhaps they could do a seance and then ghosts can say one sentance aloud in turn?
