This game's theme is soooo generic it hurts, but it is a unique mechanic so I am moving forward with it. So the basics of the game is 2 wizards who duel by casting and countering each other's spells. Part of the mechanics is arranging your spells in a certain order around you so you can cast other spells.

So right now the title of the game is Sorcerer's Circle, but it is so bad that my wife and I make fun of it everytime we say it. For example, we might say, " Hey do you want to go play *clear throat* SORCERERS CIRCLE Circle, circle.... circle" then roll on the ground laughing at the nerdiness we have just achieved.

So I need a few suggestions for a name that isn't dorky, and you wouldn't be ashamed to tell your parent in laws if they asked you what you have been doing lately. "Oh I have just been developing my game... SORCERER'S CIRCLE!!!! And you?"

P.S. If anyone suggests "Wizard's Duel" I feel sorry for you and anyone who knows you ;)

Are any of these

Are any of these okay?

Sorcerer's Showdown
BattleClash
Opposing Forces
Mano Y Mano
Bring-It!
Wizard's Brawl
Brawling Wizards
Magician's Challenge
Rival Mages
Mage Rage

I could go on and on, but here's how I started. I just took what you actually do in the game and went to an online Thesaurus. Then I looked up words for "Duel" or "fight". Then I looked up words for Sorcerer and mashed 'em together. I like Mage Rage the best, so I ended the list there, but I think you can see that you'll find something you like eventually.

Good luck and please let me know what you ended up with! :)

Not nerdy...you could always

Not nerdy...you could always make it sound violent to hide it.

First off do not use cliché DD, wizard hat type names (Wizard, Paladin, mage, Elf etc.)

Some names I came up with in 5 mins:

Magician's Court

Spellbinder

Spellbound

If the card effects or

If the card effects or support flow outward, how about something like Ripples, Quantum Circle (heh sounds like legit science), Stepping Stones...

What about "surging magic".

What about "surging magic". Can you tell this to your parent in laws?

But why not just rearange your orriginal name: "The circle of sorcerers" seems more unambiguous to me (but i´m no native speeker)

Does it have to be about

Does it have to be about magic-users dueling? Consider changing the theme entirely. Something fresh even if it doesn't make much sense would be more of a hook than *yawn* another game about wizard duels.

Could it be about famous chefs cooking dishes to attract the attention of Norse gods? Because Odin's Scones or Thor's Souffle both sound like games I would want to try.

How about philosophy?

How about a philosophy/religion term instead of a fantasy one? Like Tao, or yin-yang, or alter-ego, you figure...

Keep thinking!

Check this out:

Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmgang

excerpt:

Quote:
In 1957, Poul Anderson – a Danish American who frequently used Viking themes in his writings – published the science fiction story "Holmgang" " (collected in the 1982 anthology Cold Victory). The story's two protagonists – feuding spacemen of the future who are of distant Scandinavian origin and one of whom (the bad guy) is historically conscious – decide to revive this Viking tradition, resorting to a deadly holmgang on a lonely asteroid instead of a sea island, in order to settle their irreconcilable differences over a tangled issue involving crime, politics and a woman's love.

Another suggestion for a name: "Rencontre"

A little latin . . .

How about some latin-based words:

"veneficus macto"

"veneficus duo"

Meaning:
veneficus: poisonous, magical; witch, wizard, caster of spells

Meaning:
macto: to magnify, glorify, honor; slay, fight, punish, afflict.

duo: two
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Non-Latin ideas:

Spell Play (as opposed to sword play)
Mage War(s)
Wiz Biz (just kidding) :)
Out Cast (as in to cast better spells than the other person)

My two cents

..Been snooping around here for some time.. decides to join so I could pitch my two cents..

Hexequence

A Portmanteau of Hex, Sequence.. Quoting your original post, here's how it inspired me

"Part of the mechanics is arranging your spells (hex) in a certain order (sequence) around you so you can cast other spells
.. Yes, I'm trying to be oh so clever, but hopefully you get the idea.. :)

I really like Gambit. I think

I really like Gambit. I think I have settled on a name though... Duel

Simple, catchy, and it explains in a way that you don't feel like a nerd for saying it. :)
