I've got two games getting close to playtest stage.

They're are very short - an A5 sheet front & back

Pocket Sports Cycling
Pocket Sports American Football

Rules for both games have been written but extra eyes often pick better format options or areas that need further explanation.

They may need a little more but as I'm trying to condense it to A5 size, it might be a squeeze.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)

Dice maps are soon to follow which will help visualize play.

Every time I think...

Each time you come to us with a NEW sport you want to take on! You're like a factory pumping out sport games... ;)

But seriously, I have never played any of your games - however simply from a logistics and business stand point of view - you are CONSISTENT with NEW games (although in the same genre - which is a GOOD thing, you are focusing on games you know how to produce).

As a business you have probably achieved more than MOST designers will ever get the chance to do... Now I know you deal with factories in China and I know you warned us about quality and pricing, but still I think you deserve an ovation...

Seriously like I said from a business stand point of view - you are years ahead most of us! :)

Now if only I could find a Publisher...! :P

Also you are probably earning money making your games - while most of us struggle to even try to break even with the cost of producing artwork for cards and the like...

Congratulations! You're like an "Exploding Kittens" but dice! Okay maybe not 100% accurate - but it was meant as a compliment! :)

Thanks for the comments! Yes,

Thanks for the comments!

Yes, we do sports games for one reason. The market never grows tired of sport. Events get bigger, fans remain passionate and merchandise sells.

This is our 4th year and these games will bring our range to over 15 (including limited editions etc)

The equation to keep games simple, fast and able to be renewed with each reprint, helps us move with the market....or that's the plan.

On our first game, I had to find a graphic artist and website designer. I decided to take a year course and qualify as a graphic designer to cover art myself. Then learning how to use a website builder combined the two jobs. Dealing with the factory direct after living in China for 9 years has also cut out the need for a middle man.

I hope I can keep on 'exploding' for years to come. BTW - I do plan to make non sports games :)

Thanks again

Yeah, see, I didn't even catch there being any baseball reference.

Rules, rules, rules

I'm going to second what quest said - congrats on your continued success and I'm glad to see the franchise growing!

Onto the rules (of course, any critiques you don't like, feel free to ignore):
-Cycling
- In non-solo play, I'm confused by player's starting positions. Does everyone start even? Or is their position determined by starting order? If so, in a 4P game, does that put the last player 3 spots out of first? And if all players are even, are 'back marker' challenges irrelevant? Some clarification on starting position would be helpful.
- I think it would read more clearly in general with some rearrangement, too. Describing first the different modes of play (solo/time, tour, grand tour) and then getting into actual game play and dice rolls makes more sense to me. Going from the largest concept (here's a new game and what it's about), to the next smallest (here's the different ways you can play this new game), to the smallest (here's how the turns of those games happen) seems more straightforward to me. You may have to put a description of SOLO play alone at the end - but that's not an entirely bad thing.
- Something small - in 'grand tour mode' you reference the Peloton as 'ALL' - something like '1-6' would be a little clearer. My first thought when I saw it was that you'd somehow use 'all' of the symbols.
- I think the strategy counters belong with the 'how to play' section as well. They don't make sense at the end.

-Football
- I think the biggest issues I see here is that you mention downs, and the use of downs, but it's not mentioned how many the offensive team gets, or what happens if they run out. If they're infinite, what benefit is it if they reset?
- That's pretty much it as far as the rules go, the rest was pretty clear. I did want to mention something though - with your EndZone die, you claim that it's a 4/6 chance at TD, but, one of the faces is a re-roll of that die, so you actually only have 5 final outcomes, making it 80% likely to score a TD. I'm not sure if that's what you wanted or not, but you could always do something like a 'goal-line stop' that forces them to make another play? Just throwing out ideas (pun intended.)

Hope that helps - if you have any questions, let me know.

Many thanks

Thankyou Daniel for your input. Excellent advice and observations.

Reformatting the Cycling in the order you've suggested is a good tip and I agree it will read better and lead the new player through the game introduction in a logical progression.

SOLO mode can be just the time trial which gives you a starting position or a personal best race time. You can then take that position into the TOUR EVENT.

Mulitplayer format will still see all riders do a time trial and start in there assigned time position. You may be in 5th, I may be in 9th.

The BACK MARKERS are the 'ghost riders' in all other positions. When players are in sequenced positions (you 5th, me 6th) then I will be the BACK MARKER and have the extra threat of passing you.

A few games I have played through see these positions flip back and forth for some tense laps. I will be including some 'strategy' counters like a 'Double Move' to allow for an extra attack on a single turn, and 'Fan on the Track' that is an interrupt directly on rider to push them back one position. These will then be important on when to use them throughout the race and which rider to use them on.

I may have to put the counters and rules for their use onto the website as a PDF mini expansion. I've done this for a couple of other games as the A5 rules sheet size only holds so much info!

Peloton 1-6 is clearer too :)

The mentioning of DOWNS in Football. This can be cleared up a bit. 4 downs per attacking phase. Any reset, allows for 4 more. Any attack that does not result in scoring points, either a TD or FG, is counted as 1 down. After 4 downs, the opposing team takes possession and attacks.

I'll rethink how better to improve that.

The EndZone die has 4/6 immediate TD chance with a 1/6 chance a reroll for the TMO will occur.
The last 1/6 Out of Bounds forces another down, which is similar to your suggestion of a Goal Line Stop.

All super ideas and respect to you Daniel for taking your time to not only read through the rules, but to provide some great insight! Thank you kindly.

Audible play option

Someone (pretty sure Gregg @Jewell Games) mentioned audible plays in Gridiron.

Some of my other games have faces on some dice that allow two options such as Passing, or, Kicking a field goal. I already have that on the QB die in this game, but I think I can fit in the audible play option too.

One die face for the QB reads SET PLAY +1. He will have a reroll and see which position (WR,TE,RB or QB himself) the play will go to, with the bonus of +1 on the play value.

Adding a tiny graphic (like a mini speaker) will now allow for the QB to play as above or nominate which position he chooses to pass to in lieu of the +1 bonus.

A small change but simple choice in a dice game adds a deeper feeling of involvement, especially if he has called the play and the dice rolls are kind :)
