Best box size?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some input on which size tuckbox to use for my game Pleasant Dreams.

A little back story:

Recently I ran a successful Kickstarter for the game and I had planned for the following tuckbox:

5.75” x 3.75” x 0.875” plus 1” hang tab, 350 gsm C1S, 4/0 print with aqueous varnish, die-cut & glued. The 42 cards themselves are: 2.75” x 4.75”, 310 gsm C2S gray core, 4/4 print with aqueous varnish, die-cut for rounded corners & shrink wrapped as one deck

I recently got the blank proofs and am now reconsidering the size. You can see a video of the components here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1143256637/pleasant-dreams-a-card-g...

The box is oversized and my solution for making sure it can withstand stacking other games on top is to use a carboard insert. An alternative is to use a smaller box that fits the game more snugly.

Here are the pros and cons I've thought of so far:

Bigger tuckbox: looks more appealing in stores and is more likely to be picked up by customers. See also this article by the League of Game Makers: http://www.leagueofgamemakers.com/packaging-your-game-so-stores-can-ykno...

Daniel Jensen: "You should also be wary of making "mall things" like a card game in a tuck box. They are easily stolen so stores have to have them in a limited space (usually behind their counter) and there is only so much they can keep there. Also you get very little shelf awareness there (people seeing your game)."

Smaller tuckbox: fits in a coat pocket so more likely to be brought along as a travel game. Don't need an insert, so will probably be sturdier.

James Mathe: "Humm... Tuckboxes suck. Non Standard card sizes suck. Hang tabs tend to fall off. Whatever box you use just make it the size it needs to be to fit the cards. I prefer telescoping boxes even on card games."

Switching to a 2-piece box is not an option this time around, because I haven't budgeted for that and it would add too much cost per game.

I want to make a decision on this pretty soon, so I can keep moving forward but would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Hi everyone,

I posted this also on BGG and added a poll to it. If you're interested in reading other people's views on this topic or just want to help out a buddy game designer, you can also comment/vote here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1175353/best-size-for-a-tuckbox
