My game is close to being finished and I intend to submit it to some print and play web site. What I am not sure yet is if it is a good idea to register a company name and publish my work under this company name rather than publishing it under my name.

I live in Canada, and rules/laws might be different than in the united states. A long time ago, people talked about "doing business as" name registration, which could be good, but I don't know if this kind of practice exist in Canada. If I create a real company, I would have to make financial and tax reports every year and that is something that I might not want to do.

So I was really wondering if it really worth it to register a name for PnP publishing since I am never going to publish physically a game. If my game get's popular and get published for real, another company will do it.

DBA

I am unfamiliar with Canadian regulations but in the US it is not difficult or expensive to register your DBA (Doing Business As) and is required if you using a name other than your own.

I think just from the perspective of customers having a business for them to associate the product with will help them believe in it. People may not want to buy a game from Jimmy Smith but JS Games is a business that makes games so they must be professional.

I agree- though again I'm only familiar with the US end of things, a DBA is 25 bucks and filling out a brief form at your county clerk's office. literally took me about 5 minutes. Though to be fair- it's certainly fluff, and you could say your game is a (using the prior example) JS Games game without a DBA (you just can't sign things as JS Games), there's no downside to having it.

I made a small search on the internet and I did not find much. A web site said that in canada, a "doing business as" is called "operating as". But I have not found actually any place where to register it. Also, I am not sure if it's Federal or Provincial responsibility.

We work with 100's of

We work with 100's of publishers at http://www.RPGNow.com and I'd say half of them don't have any special paperwork filled out - they just call themselves by some company name and we write the checks to an individual and you claim it as income under your countries ID number (SSN in the USA).

So, in short, yes use a name of some sort that's not your own and don't worry about doing anything official if it's a small time operation.

It it's a name that will

It it's a name that will follow me for eternity and if it does not have any financial responsibilities, I really don't mind paying 25$ to register a name.
