Best games for couples?

My fiancé and I love games (especially those that involve some kind of wordplay like Boggle and Balderdash) but we have yet to find any fantasy or role-playing or just plain old board games that are geared towards two players (read: couples).

Can anyone recommend any kind of game that would be suitably challenging and absorbing for a somewhat nerdy/geeky couple?

Thanks,

Hal & Mercedes

Sure Thing!

- Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries...man that game can be brutal but fun! This is made for 2-3 players and is a tight brutal map.

- Summoner Wars is another great two player game. It's got strategic depth and yet it's simple to play and learn.

- Lost Cities I've heard is good. I've never played though so I don't really know for certain.

Out of these three though, I'd suggest Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries. My wife and I LOVE this game. It's probably one of our favorite games we have! We play it way more than any other game we have.

Aton

Aton is a 2-player abstract kind of game with an egyptian theme. There multiple paths of victory and is pretty fun and quick. You can get some good strategies going in this one. I have played it once with wife and multiple times with my 13 yr daughter (who destroyed me in our last match!)

I'll post you games from my

I'll post you games from my closet that I played with my girlfriend. I added a (+) when my GF loves it and we have played multiple times.

Age Of Mythology: Not a perfect game in it self, some bug and issues, but the 2 player works well. Check out my variant

Carcassone(+): Plays well at 2p, we also play on Xbox.

Catan(+): My girlfriend love catan, I made an awesome 2 player variant. go check it out.

Cleopatra(+): My GF love egyptian stuff. We managed to play this one at 2 player by using a variant for making corruption giving you negative points in a trigular increment.

Dungeon Quest: Plays well at 2P, but my GF did not really like it.

Guillotine(+): This one is nice and plays pretty well.

King's Blood: Quick game that is OK at 2, but could become pretty boring with multiple play.

Leonardo Da Vinci: I tried with with my GF, it's not optimal for 2P without making a few tweaks. Using my variant could help. There are 2p variant suggestions on BGG.

Lord of the Rings confrontation: A good 2 player game (expecially with my dice variant). My GF hate it due to some conflicting rules.

Louis XIV(+): Play pretty well at 2. We use 2 AI proposed in the rules that adds influence on the board.

Mammamia(+): Plays pretty well at 2.

Puerto Rico(+): Plays very well with a 2 player variant. There are many variants out there, I could tell you what I use.

Rune Age: Awesome deck building at 2 player. My GF did not hate the game, but we only played it once.

San Juan: Plays very well at 2 player. my GF found it OK.

That's Life: Playable at 2 players, but my GF found it pretty dull.

To court the king: Also playable at 2 player. It was an OK experience with my GF.

Viktory 2: I tink I tried this with my GF, but not beign a wargame fan, I don't think she liked it.

Duel Masters/Kaijudo: Very interesting 2 player CCG, but was a very confusing experience for my GF. Apparently tapping mana is not intuitive.

Arkham Horror: Played once with my GF. Not a bad expericence, still I am not sure if the game balance is the same with 2 players. I also designed a variant a long time ago to make the game similar what ever the nb of players.

Good 2 player games that I have not yet played with my girlfriend for various reasons:

Wiz War: Seems to work great at 2 players.

Eclipse: Watch my 2 player variant setup, many people said the experience was good.

Starcraft: Very convoluted game that my GF hate, but play wells at 2.

Heroscape: Plays well at 2, but I don't think my GF has any interest in it.

Battlemaster: Good 2P game, takes a huge amount of space and might not be attractive to my GF.

Hope it helps. All the variants I designed can be found here:

Enjoy and have fun!

Second the game Lost Cities.

Second the game Lost Cities. I give that game to all my friends who get married. It is a game with lots of strategic depth and is simple to learn and is only for 2 players.
