How about a Board Game designer WebRing

I am currently archiving my old websites and I remembered that most of my website were part of a web ring.

A web ring is a hub of web site grouped around a same subject. The webring site, gives you a widget that can be placed on your website that allows the user to navigate from a site to another.

I thought that it could be idea for my new sites to be part of a ring too. So I searched for rings about "board game design" or even "game design" and found nothing. I search for rings about board games, and it generally contains site dedicated to a game in particular.

So I was wondering if it could be a good thing to create a web ring about "Board game designers". A lot of us here probably have a website of their own where they expose their design, I think we could have enough website to create a ring.

It has been a while since I have used Web Rings. Not even sure if my account is still valid. The idea is that a user needs to create the ring, then other users submit their website, and the user that created the ring must accept the submission.

What do you think?

Anybody interested is submitting the site or managing the ring?

I'll write a copy of this message on BGG.

According to some people on BGG, it seem that WebRings would now be an obsolete method of communication.

Does anybody share the same position?

Spreading and sharing ideas by any method is a good one...

While some on BGG may think a webring antiquated, I would argue that any method by which ideas can be shared is good - though with time and resources being finite people will put their efforts where they will get the best return.

I did not know that they were that much outdated. I joined web rings way after year 2000, so I thought they were really something new.

True, search engine are becoming better and better, but most of the time, when I am searching something very specific, I usually find crap.

Maybe it's me who just want things to be more organized since I am a library technician.

Still, if most people think it is obsolete, I will not create one.

I think the "web ring" idea

I think the "web ring" idea is kind of antiquated - but that doesn't make it a bad idea. It could simply be a widget with a list of websites that pulls from a central database that could be updated. And each of the websites could use it if they wanted to. I think its a good exercise in general to get such a list started anyway - since that can only help us. Even if its only in a thread.

HAHAHA! When I read "webring" I nearly died! That brought me back to 1999!

I second the idea of side widgets to other people. I think it's okay for websites that aren't selling anything. I think webring has now evolved into "selling advertising space".

Well, I thought that web rings would be something like that. I took a screen shot of the ring panel on one of my old website which is still active.

I posted the picture here:

And I 'third it'...

For an example of how to do the side widget / cluster of related resources concept well, take a look at what wikipedia does with the concept of a 'series'.

Look at the "Software Development" entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_development There is a persistent widget on the right-hand side that follows you throughout that area and provides you with context and access to additional resources you might not have other wise considered.

The entry for "Science" is another great example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science

I don't know any alternatives

I don't know any alternatives to webrings, but I am open to suggestions.

Did you see my post just above yours regarding how wikipedia solves this dilemma? We could go with a similar model.
