Yeah I was on Facebook just looking up some ad related material (Ad Audiences) ... And I clicked on a link to "Total Battle". The URL/Link is: https://totalbattle.com

Anyways if anyone wants to TRY, you get 48 express building (no waiting) and one week of protection from being attacked.

They offer you a ton of FREE stuff... At the beginning until it wears off (you only have 48 hours of Total Development).

It is VERY similar to Evony or LOU. You build your empire, gather resources, have heroes, can craft weapons and equipment, etc.

TBH I was a bit surprised on how EASY the game is. But that's when you are on the 48 hour speed-up.

Anyways if anyone has some free-time. Take a look!

At the beginning from Level 1 to 6...

You need to play INTENSIVELY since there is so much going on and you know very little of the game. But for about (I say) 8 hours ... You're going to be GLUED to the game. Because everything is built INSTANTANEOUSLY, you don't have to wait...

But once you've maxed out those 8 hour and reached Level 6... The game will slow down and it becomes a "check every day" sort of a game. You don't need to be always playing...

Similar to Evony and LOU (Lord Of Ultima -- for those who did not know)!

What is the appeal of these sorts of games?

Hmm,,, Not quite sure how to answer that!

If you like games that feature things like "Roman Empire" or some classical Empire (Athenian perhaps), etc. You'll find ruling your own empire and city quite FUN, TBH.

And then there is the Tech Tree like in Civilization... But of course it is like 100x harder because it take a LOT of time to progress... However if you like CIV, this game is also quite similar too (from a city building perspective). In CIV, you build an empire ... In this game you only control ONE (1) city.

In addition, the units vary and in this game... They are Fantasy-Based. So Dragons, Gryphons, Elementals, Giants, Beasts, etc. Again with real LONG "Tech Trees" for upgrading.

My guess the game takes like 1 year to play (Maybe). There is also a crafting engine which allows you to combine elements with gems and forge CUSTOM pieces of equipment for your Hero or Captains.

The game is REAL COOL. I've played LOU and Stormfall ... Evony not so much. Never the less, Total Battle is real FUN! I'm am finally starting the game "as-it-was-meant" to be played (no more Total Development). So this will be my first introduction into the game.

Here's an in-game screenshot...

I know the intro page with the castle looks VERY SUCKY. But here is an in-game screenshot ... And you'll see it looks pretty decent:

I've chatted with TWO (2) retired folks

This is a MATURE game ... For younger *serious* players and "retired" gamers too... They play regularly and LOVE it!

So, there you go... Some people LIKE games with cities and conquering, etc. Similar to the ones I mentioned earlier.

It's a very slow game after the first 48 hours

IDK how people play... I guess to pass time. Because the game is VERY slow. I've played other games where at LEAST the resources would be like over 2k per hour. In this game... 500 per hour. Very slow indeed. But I guess it's a balancing thing. You want people to keep grinding and playing.

Anyhow... I don't know HOW LONG I will last at this game. It's very cool, but I'm more into designing and PLAYING Video Games is a DISTRACTION from what is important. Look, this morn, it was 5:30 AM and I woke up... What did I do??? Got up and headed for the CPU. Wanted to check IF I could look for buried treasure (so to speak -- want to enchant some armor) and started playing some more...

It is cool. But it sucks the life out of you...

Engagement =/= Addictive

This is the main concern I have with gaming in general. There's a difference between creating an engaging game, and creating a psychologically-addicting one. Even something as mainstream and "friendly" as Animal Crossing is guilty of these kinds of design decisions.

Like, who really wants to play a game where the main selling point is that it's "addictive"? Personally speaking, that kind of marketing angle really concerns me and I think it gives the games industry (particularly the video game industry) a bad name.

I mean its really FUN!

You're part of a Clan and we are currently in Position #4 in the Leaderboard.

But yeah it's very "addictive"... I mean there is always something to do and you learn as you play. You can WAIT 1 hour to get 300 Lumber, Stone or Iron. Or you can go out and conquer and get 50,000 for 1 hour of effort. You just got to learn HOW to play THIS game properly...

It's VERY FUN too! It takes time... too. I'm just worried that I won't have any life if I play this game further. Because you're either ALWAY on or forever checking back... And in this game, you DON'T need to WAIT. You can conquer places ALL THE TIME.

That's what I meant by "addictive". The game lets you PLAY it.

Note #1: It's not like other MMO of this kind where you can "give orders" and wait for them to get done and return a day later. In this game, you actually need to micromanage your Hero and Captains, there is no "ordering" and repeating as many of these game do...

So it means you are totally GLUED to the game IF you want to progress...

And if they're not paying you, you need to drop that game like a hot rock.

Yeah I know...

It's one of those games that takes forever to get anywhere. But you have a clan, camaraderie and good folks to play with. Common goals, common experiences, etc.

I don't know why you say "Barf"... I guess you've never tried a game similar. If you had, you would of say maybe play 1-2 hours per day and limit how much you play...

But "dropping like a hot rock" ... I'm not sure. Today's Thanksgivings (Canadian), so this whole weekend was a clear "waste of time". I'm on Holidays until tomorrow morning! Hehehe.

I'm a bit surprised because you CODE Video Games... One of THESE type of MMOs is really an amazing CODING effort. It's really AMAZING in terms of technology, music, design, the whole nine yards!

I thought you of all people could "appreciate" it's implementation and very "addictive" game play. But I guess not... No problemo.

Addictive Game Design

I personally don't have such a positive view of games designed to pull any of a host of "psychological tricks" to get people to play the game, and keep playing. So no, I would be immediately turned-off by what they would subject me to in order to keep playing.

Again, there are ways to design a game to make it engaging without resorting to subjecting people to addictive behaviours, with or without the social aspect you mention.

I don't know why I seem to be making such a big deal out of this. It's just not my cup of tea. My apologies. :)

No worries...

It's like my SPRING BREAK (or perhap FALL BREAK -- LOL). TBH, I'm not yet sure I WANT to play this game. It's cool and all. But it takes a LOT of time (like I said "it sucks your life")! I wish I could play it in a more controlled manner. Without the "addiction" part. But I'm like that with games... Especially Video Games. They are "designed" to consume time... Especially these MMOs nowadays, takes like over 1 year of time invested in playing the game.

Don't get me wrong, I LIKE it... But I DON'T like what it does to me... I am a bit compulsive and usually focus on things nicely (when designing games and such). But "Total Battle" (TB) has got me kinda "hooked". It's a matter of setting BOUNDARIES like 2 hours per day MAXIMUM. Even IF I spent my entire days Saturday and Monday (today) playing.

I'll guess to see if I can PLAY without it interfering with my normal duties. I mean Moderation is quiet over this weekend. Not too much activity ... But I like to reserve time to work on "designing" and "reading" notes and going through the routine I have with design.

With this TYPE of game... I see "interference" and believe me... It's not like there are not people with MORE experience playing. I'm a nobody in this pool of players. Some people have like 200 Billions points. I've got 24,000!! (Hehehe... A real Noob).

We'll see how it goes. If I can restrict myself and still be able to do my other habitual things that keep me "moving forwards" ... Not just "standing still". And I feel like Video Games like these "freeze me". Or maybe a better way to say it: "They CAPTIVATE me." I co-wrote a Design Document for Star Wars: Galactic Frontier. It was supposed to be for a SW MMO similar to TB. But different. Anyhow in the game you could control Millions of units at the highest levels of play.

Anyhow neither here nor there. I'm going to CURB my playing as of tomorrow...

Note #1: The idea is some game play in the evening between 8 PM to 10 PM. Then I can go back to my "notebook reviews" and leave my mind less "nerved up" from the game. Anyhow... I'm making it sound way worse than it is. "Designing" is such a RELAXING experience. Playing Video Games (ANY) competitively is STRESSING. Anyhow ... I'm probably the only one who is partaking in this game. But @X3M dropped his designing duties when he started playing (and recording) AoW3 ... A RTS Video Game which is similar to a MODERNIZED DUNE.

It's a matter of managing expectations and controlling "the habit".

I used to be a BIG TIME gamer when I was in my teens and twenties. Now that I've learned people who are retired play this kind of MMO ... When you have nothing to do... It's FUN to just PLAY.

But when you have things to do, to plan, or just to think about. The mind doesn't get any rest from this kind of MMO.

Again probably making it sound worst than it really is... But you get the drift.

Note #2: Since I managed to get some creative "design" work tonight (this evening) ... I think I can BALANCE "design" and playing this game. Although I have taken a step back from "Video Game Creation" and trust me... I don't want to pursue this, it is much too involving. And there is so much competition in the Mobile space. Granted there is competition in TableTop Design too... But I'm less concerned since I still feel like I can "attract" attention to my projects.

I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow. So far, I got 15 cards designed for the 1st Edition of Monster Keep (MK).

Although...

I've been able to "multi-task" and do things like play "Total Battle" (TB) and do some designing... I have reached an IMPASS with the game. One that has forced me to retire from the game.

You need 1.4M Valor Points to get to Level 2 units, exploration, etc. The whole "nine yards" (So-to-speak). Well I only have 140k... And I will be losing my best troops (Mercenaries) in a day (temporary units -- Last for 7 days).

Granted it is FUN, the GRIND is ridiculous and highly unlikely to happen. But I really think the game is COOL and deserves more attention. Anyhow I reached out to the Makers of "Total Battle" (TB) and asked them if they might be interested in an "exchange" program.

I await the tapjoy

Hope the reward is decent.

I played so many versions of this game already. That I simply barge in, get the level required by the tapjoy offer in a week or 2. Then simply burn my entire castle in front of the alliance that I was part of. Only a good welcoming clan will get all my resources as rewards.

Thing is, once the tapjoy is completed. I still might have like half of the total resources left. Which would certainly lift someone else a level or 2 as well. Once it has been stolen.

This one time, I didn't like a clan. I ate them all. homnomnom :D

This game is not unique. And they better pay up to you, if you are making advertisement for them. If not, there are better games out there ;)

It's FUN because we are a CLAN...

And I was promoted from Soldier to Veteran and now from Veteran to Officer.

Maybe this game is WORTH playing ... If we go on the OFFENSIVE and conquer some dudes that stole from our Clan Gold Mine. It would be fun to go out with a Blaze of Glory! (LOL)

But the grind is TOUGH...

Anyhow I am using my MERCENARY troops to kills as many monsters as possible before I lose them (1 day). So we'll see what happens next.

But I am having FUN with all the IN-GAME Chat and camaraderie!

As per your advice...

@X3M: I solicited the Admins of "Total Battle" (TB) to see if they would be interested in Advertising on BGDF.com. We'll see what they say. I proposed a transaction that would be of mutual interest and cost $0.00 to them and to myself.

I would be a "exchange" of Advertising in return for In-Game Credit. It's good that you pointed this out, because I had not thought of it before. It would be a Lifetime Banner (2 Slots) the most popular current package from this website.

Like I said, "If you don't TRY and ASK, you will never know IF they are interested or NOT!"

I'll let you all know what they say! Cheers.
