In case anyone didn't know, this year's UK Games Expo is taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, UK on 2nd to 4th June.

There is a lot there for game designers. For example:

  • A large playtest zone run by Playtest UK, with volunteers to help you gather playtesters.
  • The "Wyverns Lair", where a dozen designers get to publically pitch their games to a panel of publishers.
  • A designer/publisher speed dating event.
  • A designer/publisher social/networking event.
  • Very many publishers, including several of the big European publishers, so you may be able to get pitch meetings arranged.
  • Coffee.

So is anyone here going? I am!

I'll be there!

I should be there all of the days. Look out for me on the Playtest tables with:

Relaximus Maximus:
A set collecting game where you are cute dogs throwing the most legendary party in ancient dog Rome: the Barkannal!

Surf Gods:
The water gods are having a big wave surfing competition - one where they control the waves themselves. Can you time the perfect ride?

Door Number 3:
Game show hosts are bluffing, bribing, and rigging their shows in an attempt to trick their opponents into selecting the worst possible prizes. Will you win a BRAND NEW CAR or get stuck with a goat?

Carpe Demon:
The members of a small New England township are trying to exorcise a group of bodywapping demons. But be careful: confront the demon unprepared and they could possess YOU!

+ Maybe some more

I can't say I blame you -- a transatlantic trip is a big deal. Unfortunately I missed your seminar last year as I was volunteering elsewhere at that time. Hopefully I'll be able to catch you some time in the future.

And to follow John's lead, what I am planning on playtesting:

Invaded, a game where you and your fellow players take the part of indigenous tribes in a relatively peaceful land which is invaded by a non-player colonial power that just wants to take control. This is a medium-ish-weight game of managing resources, trading, and occasionally fighting, and is roughly Euro-ish in style.

I will also have a load of other prototypes with me (Boogie Knights, My Name Is..., March Hares, Giftmas, etc.), but probably not using them in the formal playtesting slots.

Wow. Based on these clever titles alone I wish I could be there!

hall map

I did a hall map for the back of our fliers but figured it might be useful for others at A4 size too:

(you have to put up with our logo I'm afraid, but I've left room to make your own notes, highlight specific stalls etc)

Oops! Family first, I guess. :)

If you can make it on either of the other days, I'm sure you would have a great time though.

In answer to your question, yes, you do need to book a playtest space. Here is a link to the info about signing up. Basically you need to fill in a form to register your interest, then at some time very soon a calendar will be made available for you to book 90 minute time slots -- initially they'll be limited to one per designer, but nearer the date, when everyone has had a chance to get in, that restriction will probably be removed.

Does this Expo match our needs?

Lijia Game Production Co., Ltd./ www.lijiagames.com is a manufacturer with main service of production for board games, card games, etc. Does this game expo match our needs? Can our team member meet game publishers to show them our professional manufacturing experience and advantage? Thank you all!

It could help, but is smaller than some other events

@ Tony – depends on how many trade shows you can attend a year.

I'm not an expert on the manufacturing side but I would guess the 5 best shows to attend to meet with publishers would be:

Essen (SPIEL 17)
GenCon

GAMA (already finished for 2017)
NY Toy Fair (already finished for 2017)
Nuremberg Toy Fair / Spielwarenmesse (already finished for 2017)

If you have to pick 1 or 2, I would say you'll get better money for your trip traveling to Essen, as more European publishers will be attending, and a higher number of American publishers will fly over.

Thank being said, there will certainly be a number of publishers in attendance at UKGE, and a lot of designers looking to self publish via kickstarter or similar.

Hi John,
Many thank you for the information you gave. What a good forum here is! Everyone is professional in game fields. I will push our team to go to Essen. but can we find interpreter of German and English at Essen? Thank you!

Expo Plans

Just thought I'd update on my plans for the weekend.

I'm booked in for a couple of playtest sessions for my game, 'Invaded' (about indigenous tribes being invaded by a powerful colonial nation), at 14:30 on Friday and 10:00 on Sunday. I am also volunteering at the Playtest Zone around lunchtime on Friday and for the morning on Saturday.

Other than that, I'm planning on spending most of Sunday with my family, and Saturday afternoon mooching around and seeing the sights.

See some of you soon...

Rob
