Couldn't you just save out a different, unblocked file type?

I did convert it to a .doc

I did convert it to a .doc file for the time being, but the .doc file is unsupported by newer microsoft products and .docx was the replacement. If you have Office 2007 or newer, you probably save to .docx files unless you manually change it.

If you save it as a Rich Text

If you save it as a Rich Text Format, it should be compatible with just about everything.

Normally, when you want to publish information, you convert it as PDF to make sure the file cannot be altered by somebody else. There are tons of free PDF creation software.

pdf

Why not post a pdf? A word document is only needed if the receipient is going to edit it, which is in my experience rarely the case when posting something like rulebooks (unfortunately... but that is another subject). Not everyone has MS Word installed (I have not always had it even back when I had Windows installed on some computer) and other software loading Office documents will never be perfect.

CutePDF

I use the free Cute PDF. It acts like a printer driver, so you just select Print from within office and then select Cute PDF from the list of printers. It then generates the PDF file wherever you want.

I use PDF fill because I think it can print 300 DPI more easily.
