Both are good requests, but there are a few issues.
1) "create a forum topic" is specific to a forum area. So adding a link at the top of the recent topics area would be an issue to associate the "create a forum topic" to a specific topic. And it is best to have the topics organized, so this does not seem like a good option. I will however consider ways to help promote such a change, but it might not happen if deemed to cumbersome for little gain.
2) The FAQ will be more easily accessible, but only once the staff has had time to consider how/when/what old site content we want to bring over. The long term goal is to make this content more useful and in general it will all be accessible once we have had a chance to nicely organize the mountains of old data still floating around.

Interesting, I had not used the system to create a topic like this. Maybe I can add in something fun to allow a direct link to the add/forum page. Stay tuned.
Just for you a nice image link has been added. The image needs to be changed to distingish it from the Write new PM icon, but for now it will provide you the desired functionality you requested.
you could also add links to companys that sold game pieces, printed cards/ boards, published games, links to patent/trademark websites. just stuff that would be game inventors where interested in so we could check on prices of everything on how to get it done without asking to many questions.
