In order to graduate high school, I need to complete a project called Senior Project, and I decided that my project would be the designing of a dedicated card game (or board game. Things might change). This seems by far the best and most insightful design community so I wanted to join up and see what I can learn. It had already taught me a lot before joining up, but I figured it was time to get personal and barrage you guys with annoying questions when I have them.

Almost nothing yet...

The only real thing that I have so far is that I want to take full advantage of the zones that card games have. I'm very interested in the rules and mechanics involved in card games, so I'll probably be working on those first. But this is my first time doing anything as creative as this, so I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I suggest thinking about a theme first then...

While there is no one right path, it may be easier to brainstorm a handful of "theme ideas" you really enjoy, be it a hobby, a particular subject, a sport, etc. Don't be put off thinking about how to combine themes not matter how nonsensical it may first seem...for example, let's say you like Sci-Fi and cooking...there's tons of Sci-fi games and a handful of cooking games, but how many are both about sci-fi AND cooking? Is that possible? C.I.A. -- Culinary Institute of Aliens? At least if it is something you are interested in, you probably have good knowledge and enjoy pondering over it. It won't feel as much of a chore spending time on it. With a good theme, you can try to frame your mechanics around it.

Thanks for the advice. It never occurred to me to blend two ideas together. That'll be something to consider when brainstorming.
