Hi folks,

Seems like a nice place you have here! I found my way here when researching game design, and I have to say - there's a *lot* of really useful discussion and information here. Thanks, everyone - it's good to know that people can come here to get advice and info.

I wouldn't necessarily label myself as a game designer, I've had a few nice ideas here and there, but I've never really progressed anything further than the "oh, that sounds like a good idea" phase - until now.

I'm working on a crazy idea for a game. I've completely fallen in love with the whole idea, and all the possibilities and potential that it has. It's completely mental, but I actually think it is achievable - more details later (probably)

I hope that I can find the right information and advice that will help me develop my ideas, and I hope that I'll be able to participate here and maybe help someone else one day.

Regards,
KiltedNinja

Rough explanation..

Well to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how to describe it at the moment. It's a bit random (even though I've been working on it for around 6 months)... but I'll try to explain :

It's sort of a war game / board game hybrid. The players have various pieces (soldiers) that move around the board, and are used to attack their opponents' pieces. The players can gain control of resources, and use them to manufacture buildings to claim territory, or to boost the stats of the soldiers (attack/ defence/ special abilities). The soldiers have different classes and ranks, with differing stats and abilities and there are numerous special abilities that allow the soldiers to do different things (double attacks.. move faster, that sort of thing). Players can form alliances, trade resources, etc.

Essentially, the aim is to use your army to defeat your opponents' armies. You gain territory and resources, giving you advantages in the battle. You need to use a lot of strategic thinking with regards to planning attacks, committing soldiers to maneuvers, trying to control resources, deciding which resources to use for which reason, expanding territory - and keeping it!

There's a lot more to it (how combat works, board design / terrain / point scoring / bonuses / hidden objectives etc), but that's pretty much the basics.

I'll probably provide more information as I start to get involved here.. I want to spend a bit of time looking through discussions to see what sort of things apply to what I'm trying to design. I kind of feel like, "I don't want to say too much because my ideas are precious and I don't want them picked apart by a completely reasonable and logical discussion" :) I know that's silly, and that I'll have to get over that... but I want to acclimatise myself to the forum before I bare my soul :D
