Miniature - Tarik Takasu

Hello everyone, my name is Tarik and I'm a brazilian 3D Artist aimed at character creation, from videogames to boardgames and collectibles.

I love boardgames and tried to do some boardgame design previously, after some time I figured that my skillset could be used on another way into the creation of these.

My inclination towards boardgame designs makes me want to help everyone who needs miniatures done, be it a hobby project or a professional freelance opportunity, I want to help from prototype pieces to their final versions, I can also help on doing functional pieces and environment pieces if needed.

I worked on only one boardgame project, that's Hyground Tiles that'll soon come back to kickstarter, the creator let me post images for my portfolio, so I attached a picture he sent me of a character I created.

Also, please check my portfolio if you want to, I'll soon post some of my boardgame works and studies.

Those of us who like to

Those of us who like to design and publish games always have a need for experienced content creators. That's not a bad business model for you!

Welcome!

(I don't need miniatures right now, but still, good to know someplace to find a 3D sculptor)

Edit: If I may ask, how long does it take to build a model like the one in that image, start to finish? Can you leverage existing models when you do it? (do 10 different models take less than 10x as long as one model)

Hey there guys, thanks for

Hey there guys, thanks for welcoming me well, as Jay asked, creating models really does vary, usually creating something from zero can take between 2 to 7 days, if it is really complex, such as the kingdom death bosses, it may take up to 25 days with the assistance of an art director.

If there's many similar assets, such as soldiers wielding different weapons with different poses, I can model a base soldier within the first few days and pose it many times, then giving them the different gear they may have. It's plausible to say that things like 10 soldier models with different helmets/shields/weapons or guns can take like 9 days. So, yeah, that really depends, leveraging from previous experiences help, but since sometimes I still miss dates I always say that I'll take the maximum amount of time to create the assets.

As a reference, the referenced model took 3 days to create, but I used a "base mesh" as a reference for stuff like head size, arm and legs size, if I had to create that too, maybe within 4 days it'd be ready, I told the client I'd need 7 days, that'd give room to breath, and if changes were needed, I could be still up to the expected due date.

Hope that answers your question!

Wow, that's a long time.

Wow, that's a long time. Thanks for the information!

Really makes me wonder how all these games are coming out with miniatures now.. even charging $90-$150/box.

Maybe they have a high schooler doing it? ;)

Usually the last version is

Usually the last version is 3D printed and molded, if it is spincast, the price per copy is almost non-existant, it's basically paying about $100 to $600 for all miniatures on a small game, then, the maintenance price drops to almost 0.

Well, yeah, but there are KS

Well, yeah, but there are KS games with what must be 40 different miniatures. If those require 200 person-days to model.. well, maybe you don't get paid much per hour? :)

I suppose a lot of those games are making $500k or whatever, but still.

Model Companies vs individual efforts

The important thing to note about Miniature Kickstarters are that some of them are ran by large companies like CMON (HATE for example). These companies are very experienced with producing Miniature games which probably includes a roster of artists that they can "go to".

Some may even be employed by the company, I'm thinking about Graphic Artists which make all the editing and polish the KS page to look super attractive... And then maybe then have a "concept" artist, that does 2D versions of the minis prior to the sculptors have a go at it.

Those kinds of firms know how to produce such content. And that's why you see KS campaigns of over $500,000+ USD. It's not random luck. It's people in the business of making minis games.

Just something to consider...

Other Companies

I've seen campaigns from Mantic Games which is another big player in the Miniatures game market. They have had campaigns with over $300,000+ in funding.

All you need to do is do a search on Kickstarter and put in "Mantic Games" and you'll see a bunch of Minis games.

One I thought really cool was "Loka: The World of Fantasy Chess". Again Minis ... but used to be played on a Chess board with all kinds of poly dice.

$100,000+ for this game is pretty GOOD! But they are very experienced with producing minis games much like CMON.

Note: Hellboy "The Board Game" made over $1M+... So this is no flash pan KS either...

Another one...

Monolith Board Games which created a Conan and Batman Minis game too. Batman made $4,000,000+ in funding! Conan made $3,000,000+ in funding...

Believe me these are big production too. Batman had a 3D Rendered Video which looked amazing... (and entertaining to watch too!)

Just search for "Monolith Board Games", they've created 5 KS campaign so far and I think all but one was a "giant" production.
