Hello,

I am planning a new board game. Before I invest in it I want to know the popularity today of board games.

Many Thanks,

Are you planning on buying a new board game or are you planning on creating one?

As far as "popularity", there's definitely an upswing, but don't invest in games on the basis of popularity alone. You should want to get into board games because it's fun.

Visit a local store

If you want to know about "popularity" about "board games", I would recommend you visit a local "Game Store".

I know I have visited several and usually they carry all the staples like "Magic: the Gathering", "Pokemon", "Smallworld", "King of Tokyo", "Settlers of Catan", "Ticket To Ride", "Resistance", "Pandemic", "Race for The Galaxy", "Dominion", etc...

I'm sure someone could add more games to this list (of popular games) that you can usually see sold in a game store!

If you want to get more "immersed" into the hobby, I suggest you watch video about all the above games, to understand how they play. It will give you a good idea into the "mechanics" and update your (probably) limited knowledge of today's board games...

Upswing

They're on the upswing, but if you're thinking you'll make bank, you'll be disappointed.

From my experience, the people who are making games aren't in it for the money, but for wanting to share their art with the world. If there's monetary gain, then yay, but it's not the point.
