Hi, I just joined the BGDF forums today. I just got married to my beautiful wife Kayla. I am in the army reserve as a combat medic. I have enjoyed making games since I was 13 years old. In the army I would carry around a little book that I would write down ideas I had for games. In high school I would program a calculator to make Zelda type games.

I have finished a board game called Hexa-Wars. It's very basic. Choose a hero, kill monsters, level up, first player to defeat all their monsters in their areas win. The game takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on how many players, 2-6.

I am now working on a much bigger project. The game is a board game, rpg, pvp type of game. The basic idea was to create a game with unlimited possibilities to make your character unique to anyone else. Lets just say there are 7920 class/race combinations. This isn't including which skills, attributes or professions you choose to learn. All the classes and races are finished. I have been play testing the game with my brother. He created a Sephia Mechwarrior Justicar while I made a Elvaine Phantom Arcmage. The battle lasted for an hour since he would deal minor damage but heal himself a lot while I put my build primarily damage. He got me down to less then half my hit points then on his turn he missed with all 3 of his attacks and couldn't heal himself so then on my turn I blasted him away. lol. I thought he was going to win because on some of his turns he would heal back most of the damage I had dealt to him. Anyways, the project goes on. I will be posting it sometime. I am a little hesitant to show my work since I have spent a year and hundreds of hours developing it. I joined this site hoping I could share it with the right people and get a fan club started for it.

Welcome

Welcome Papastucker,
I am in no way the welcoming committee, but let me say there are some great people on this site who will take the time and energy to give honest feedback. you have come to the right place. i have just start the board game designing thing myself. I am not an expert, but I have learned a lot by asking questions and reading old posts. There is a wealth of information here.
I was like you very hesitant to share my ideas. Once I opened up I was able to get the feedback I needed. My advice is do not be afraid to share your ideas because you are afraid someone will steal them. It is possible but you have to start sharing at some point. I don't have much to offer but I would love to help in any way that I can.
Sincerely,
Dan

Thanks

I would love to get your advice and you are right I do need to share the ideas. I just need to plan out how I will share them. I think what I will do is share my first board game idea which is simple and fun to play. This other game I will only share a portion of it and see how it works. If people love a little bit of it then I will share more. :)

Welcome

Sounds like you have some fun ideas in the works! with that many class/race combos you might need a full time artist ;-)

I'm could use a designer :)

The game was first built for a video game but when I test played it I was the only person that could because there was too much involved and not simple. So over the year I made the game very easy and fun with a unique class system that is not in the market.

This was a great read! Levi Mote, that really helped me understand what I can and can't protect. It looks like I should patent the idea. I have a unique battle system and class/race combination system. I don't know how to go about doing this, but if I did this, I wouldn't worry anymore about someone taking the idea. The idea to me is precious and I don't want to lose all the time I have spent putting it together. I just need to know how to patent the idea and how much it would cost. :/

About the game

I posted a thread up on BGG (boardgamegeek) as well. I joined that site on the same day I have joined this one. I have been asked many questions about my design and how it works. Here is what I have posted on there!

I did the math wrong. >.< very sorry. It's only 3960 class/race combinations. With the choice of male or female, you get 7920.

Ok, guys. I know you are excited to know how this has come about. I don't want to disappoint you but the 6 races, 30 classes and 44 professions are incorrect on how I made 7920 class/race combinations. Good guess though. The game is really close to being finished and yes, you can play as many players as you want. The game is made for PVE and PVP. You can create a character and battle against other opponents or you can play through the story line and develop your character by finding new weapons and armor, obtaining new skills, attributes and professions.

This is the trick, many games have attempted it but haven't successfully accomplished the goal since it brings much chaos and unbalancing to the game since it is PVP based. There are 12 basic classes, 66 elite classes, 12 attributes, 12 professions, 162 different skills... exciting? This game can be made into a video game in the future but I designed it into a board game / table top game.

Now for the character customization. The 12 basic classes are; rogue, ranger, summoner, dragon tamer, mage, engineer, knight, warrior, enchanter, conjurer, cleric and priest. Each of these classes have their own unique set of armors and weapon and skills. If you want to be more offensive with weapons, you choose rogue or ranger, if you want to be more defensive, you go warrior or knight. If you want to be an offensive magic damage dealer, you go mage or engineer. If you want to be supportive you go enchanter or conjurer, if you want to be a healer, you go cleric or priest and last but certainly not the least, if you want to have a pet phantom minion or a dragon you choose summoner or dragon tamer.

This is the example of my idea. You get to choose 2 of the basic classes and combine them. Of course, this idea has been done by other games, FF11 and GW1, right? Well, they both had problems with pvp balance because of this. This system has slight problems with balance! It works great! If you chose to be a knight and a mage your elite class will be a darknight. 12 basic classes give you 66 different elite classes. With your elite class you will get new skills. As a darknight you learn your god skill, chaos rising. This skill chokes the life out of your enemies around you lifting them up into the air where you send them flying away from you. Each elite class has their own unique god skill.

Now, you are wondering where the Elvain Phantom Arcmage comes from. Elvain is one of the races. Archmage is an elite class combined with ranger and mage. So where does phantom come from? This is your 3rd basic class you choose. 66x10 for the classes x6 races gives you the 3960. The 3rd basic class doesn't allow you to learn the skills from that class but it gives you only a couple skills free and it allows you to do an elite class change! You know, WOW you can change your class. So can you in this game! Phantom is the summoner's code name for being a sub class (3rd) class. That is how you get Elvain Phantom Arcmage. All the classes are finished and playable. It wasn't easy to create so many combinations.

Have I got you excited yet? I haven't explained the battle system yet! The battle system is used with dice. It's very basic and fun and easy for ages 10+ to play. I wont be explaining the battle system just yet. The rules are still being typed out and the PVE isn't finished. PVE story needs to be worked on, I have no art drawn for the game but the battle system and classes are finished. I know, with this many classes, is the game really balanced? Yes... I have been working on it for a couple years off and on and I have gone through a lot of game testing and changes to create the ultimate and most rewarding unique class/race balanced system I have ever known. I have studied many games out in the market learning what they have done and I can talk to you for hours about what I think of WoW, Diablo, GW1, FF11, Aion, warmachine, warhammer, GW2, and many other games on what they did right and what I think they did wrong and what they could do better.

Anyways, I am really looking forward to making a fan club! I want people to give me advice to the game (I wont tell you the name of the game just yet). I want to post some of the basic classes and have people test the game but I haven't found the best way to post the game yet.

Also, the attributes and professions just to clarify what these are. Each level up you get 1 point for attributes and 1 point for professions. attributes are combat-only skills like strength and intelligence. Professions are non-combat-only skills like thief and tracker. These help you find better items, pick locking, or avoiding traps in dungeons.

My goal is to finish this game and get people excited about being unique than any other player and come up with their own builds that just dominate! Yes, some classes have counters to other classes hehe. It's pvp based.

P.S. Thank you for all the thumbs up! I will keep adding more information and soon a rulebook with some of the classes for you to play test. I need advice and balancing suggestions. If you think you can help in anyway, send me an e-mail and explain what you think you can do to help out. This game is like WOW on a tabletop with steroids!

Combat system

I just wanted to quickly post on here that the combat system is unique and no other game uses this system. That being said, I do have a fun simple combat based system that allows diversity and style to the game. I will not reveal the system just yet and I feel I may have already revealed enough information about the class/race system that is unique.

Lance - Papastucker

I need advice on how to go about sharing this game. I don't have the money to patent it so I know the law that if I were to share the combat system, it will not be protected. I have read up online I shouldn't share much about it until I patent it. I have however kept all records of updates since I started the design but that isn't enough to prevent the ideas being used in another game. :(
