I'm new to game design but have long been a fan of gaming in general. Lately I've found myself drawn more and more to tabletop gaming, so I decided I wanted to design my own game. I'm still in the early stages of refining my game idea but I'm aiming for the filler game genre with a card and die game.

I'm looking forward to finding out about game balancing. I think I want some sort of card battling based on pairs or runs, maybe trick taking. Some sort of game play where the players use a replenishing hand to play several hands in a round to win specific materials. These materials are used for different victory scenarios which score the player points.

Any game recommendations would be appreciated, my game collection isn't very big but I plan on buying a game a week for awhile. I've recently picked up Tsuro of The Sea, Qwirkle, Ultimate Werewolf, The Resistance, Biblios, and Allhambra. I'm hoping to put a game club together so I have a chance to play a little more often than I do now. I think playing games has got to be the best research.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to exploring the boards (both the forum boards and board game boards).

FYI quicker methods

Although this will not make you an "Expert" in the game (and probably you are not interested doing that unless you would like to pursue a role as a Game Reviewer) but you can simply Google the game and add "video"... And you'll probably get a couple videos from "Toucan Play This Game", "Dice Tower", "Bowser's Corner", "Undead Viking", "Watch It Played", "Edo's Game Reviews", "Radho Runs Through", etc.

Watching videos can get you familiar with the game's Mechanics and their application (which is pretty useful if you plan on designing innovative games with "twists" on traditional game mechanics).

That also saves you money since you don't have to BUY the game and it also saves on time too ... since the videos might give you feedback that might take several goes-around to learn.

Plus you get the opinion of professional people who can comment on the game's appeal (from different sources/authors). I personally think it's a much better use of "resources" than actually sitting down and trying to play a whole bunch of games - If you don't have the crowd to actually sit down every week - you can consume online videos much quicker...

Cheers and welcome!

Greetings

Always glad to see new members! This is a wonderful hobby filled with fun and stimulating challenges. I wish you the best and look forward to hearing your ideas.

Game Recommendations

  • Pandemic
  • Small World
  • Tiny Epic Galaxies
  • King of Tokyo

I will also plug "The Dice Tower" as a great source of board game information! another thing to search for is the designer names on any games you have liked... sometimes they have done "talks" and other times they have written books.

Always remember to think outside the box so your games will fit inside!
