Instead of attack values, we used arrows, the nb of arrows had to exceed the target's HP (hearts).
The 3x3 confinement is nice, but I realised that it could only work if each unit had the same value in total strength, else weaker units are useless.We also ended in a situation where certain units could never be placed.
A difference we had is that the 3x3 grid was virtual, there was no actually a board. This gave us flexibily and could allow the "Center" of the board to change in the middle of the game.
This is why I might try another solution where there is no limit to the size of the board, or make it very large. The game would look similar to GO.
So if you end up with weak units, you can cover more territory and build defenses, while strong units are going to be used to break defenses or destroy the units you want.
