It's the end of an era! A BGDF tradition!! Hell, an international board game community institution!!!
After lurking a while, entering one of Bryk's challenges is what brought me full on into this hobby. I can't thank you enough...My wife on the other hand would like to have a few words with you! ;)
Thanks for all you've done and hope that you will find time to make some cameo challenges!
Fellow BGDF folk: let's make this one to remember!!
Cheers
I’ve never entered this before, but it sounds like a lot of fun. I had two quick questions before I begin:
1) When you say that the theme “Theme: Wind” does that mean that THE theme has to be wind, or that it must just be a major element? For example, could I develop a game about tightrope walking in Chicago where wind is one of a couple major perils?
2) How detailed do you want the final entry to be? Do you just want the rules, and everything else is appreciated? If my game includes cards, should I just say, “Event Card: Pigeon Attack- Must take a balance check or fall,” or do you want pictures of actual card layouts? Do you want just the basics for design, or is art appreciated at this step?
Simon
Hello Simon ...
Here are a couple of answers for you:
1> Wind (or a symbolic wind-like element) should be a big factor, if not the biggest factor in the theme of the game. So, in your example, I would say you're walking a thin rope line (sorry, couldn't help myself), because it seems that balance and gravity are more important to a rope walker than wind (although I expect it to be a factor). Better game themes would be sailboat or hot air balloon racing. However, if your rope walking game was a dexterity game where players blew through straws to try to knock over a pawn balancing on a wire ... that might fit.
I wish I could be more black & white on it ... but theme is usually allowed to be a bit squishy in these Challenges.
2> Entries have been anywhere from a "story treatment" type of paragraphs about what the game might be like to full-blown rule sets. It really is up to each entrant to figure out what might best sell the voters on their idea. Production-ready art is definitely not required. Generally, a couple of pictures are used to give the audience a better idea of a concept that words might not do justice to.
Be sure to check out the word and picture limits given in the GDS Details: http://www.bgdf.com/node/27
Also, read through some of the entries from prior months to get an idea of what's been entered and which ones have received higher vote counts.
Good luck -- looking forward to your entry. :-)

For the first time in a few months this challenge really got the juices flowing, so my submission is should be sitting in your inbox. First time I've really had an idea and written it all down and it be workable (and hopefully good) first time. Though I'm not sure it's the most original game idea, I think it should be fun to play, which is the important thing after all.
Thanks for the challenge!
There's about a day-and-a-quarter left before the deadline.
At this point I have received 4 entries, which I have replied to via e-mail. So, if you have sent me your entry but have not received a reply back, please double-check the sent-to e-mail address and resend it to me.
Thanks,
-Bryk
I just sent mine a few minutes ago.
This was a challenging theme! Turns out I had TOO MANY ideas and went into catatonic shock.
I hope my recovery was sufficient for my submission :)
Cheers,
Mitch
Okay -- deadline is here and I have a goodly number of entries in my e-mail inbox.
I won't be able to post them until later today.
Thanks,
-Bryk
I won't be able to do the normal "clean-up work" on this Challenge until tonight.
So ... I will leave the voting poll open until that time ... you get an extra 10-to-12 hours to get your vote in.
Thanks,
-Bryk

Thanks for the kind words.
But, to be clear, it is the BGDF's Game Design Showdown. It was started as a chat-based Challenge by MatthewF a long time ago. I just resurrected it as a forum-based week-long Challenge.
It will continue being hosted on a monthly basis here at BGDF ... just by great fellows like those who have been hosting the past couple of months.
And I'll be around ... but in lurker mode. ;-)
