Hello, I wanted to say hi to everyone. I hope you all had a great day :D

My name is Joshua from Silly Kid Games, I wanted to share with you some exciting news. April 21, 2015 marks the start of the Kickstarter campaign for our new action anime card game called Golem Academy. Imagine a training arena where players face off in battle, wielding the power of their ancient Golems to protect the world from evil!

Golem Academy includes more than 200 cards featuring killer full-color illustrations by our resident artist. I have attached the first promo artwork for your viewing pleasure. We plan to release a new piece of artwork every day leading up to the launch of Kickstarter ;)
If you have any questions you can email me at Joshua@sillykidgames.com

Golem battles are easy to win. You just wipe off the aleph from the emet or remove the shem from its mouth. :) I'd love to see a game like this where the players take the role of old Hasidic Kabalists instead of hip anime dudes.

So, I'm curious. Why golems?

So, I'm curious. Why golems? Although artistic trappings vary, the golem's identity as a lumbering anthropomorphic being of earth, stone, or other inanimate material is firmly established in the gamer consciousness. Golem Arcana, for example, was sensibly named seeing as how these creatures are a cornerstone of the game's identity. Divorcing the name from its origin seems self-defeating, as making a game about "golems" that bear no resemblance to the creature of Jewish folklore is like writing a game about "vampires" that are actually giraffes.

From the character bio, I get the impression that this is a game for much younger players, maybe as an alternative to Pokemon, etc. I get that the characters probably make their animals companions, hence the golem shtick, and I understand that the average 10-year-old isn't going to be privy to the prevailing zeitgeist and have his mythology nailed down to care. Just about everything targeted toward the preteen market is based in suborning phraseology and rehashing tropes, but looking at your concept art, it still seems like the game's name was drawn from a hat.

Because golems are big and powerful and.. oh they're not golems.

Yeah, I could see some interesting stuff happening with a golem themed game. Maybe you've got a weak little wizard with some tricky spells, but you really rely on your big lumbering golem to tank the hits and throw the damage around. But it's creatures, not golems? I'm a bit confused by the name now.

Anyway, the art looks awesome. I wonder about the gameplay though. Do you do anything new and interesting with the card based combat?

You're welcome, Soulfinger

You're welcome, Soulfinger :D

Please don't think that I'm ignoring you or Differentname on your earlier posts about the Golems. It's just that whenever someone has legitimate concerns like you two my CCO has requested for me to bring it to his attention. So I'm waiting for his answers to your questions so I can post it on this thread for you to read. Thank you in advance for your patience :D

I just heard back from the

I just heard back from the CCO Justin and you can read his response below:

"The creatures are created by their owners from clay and brought to life by magic. It is a re-imagining of Golems for sure, but I think it also gives us freedom to make some outlandish things. The flavor or lore behind it is that these students take what ever it is they love, their spirit and embed those passions in to their Golem. So Karin and Orderve for example. Karin loves cute things. Bows, feathers, and winged cat creatures and thus her Golem is born.

Now as for the age demographic. I hope that a 10 year old plays it and has fun but our lead game designer and myself are avid MTG players as well as nearly any other game in the hobbyist board game genre. The mechanics within the game tailor to that market. I am confident that gamers of any age will enjoy our game, especially if you enjoy the action anime genre."

Thanks for the reply, and

Thanks for the reply, and good luck with the game. The one thing I want to suggest is that the character bio you posted reads for a preteen audience. Paired with the theme and aesthetic, it looks like an entry for the 8-12, Yu-Gi-Oh/Pokemon market. If the mechanics are geared toward older players then you may want to consider rewriting the bios into something more substantial. For example, "I love my friends and would defend their lives . . ." is ripped straight from half the middle school D&D character sheets ever written. It is great trope for younger players but not very engaging otherwise.

Also, don't forget to include a baker character with a kolobok. :)

GAVIN MONSTROM KNOWN

GAVIN MONSTROM
KNOWN FACTS:
Name: Gavin Monstrom
Nickname: Gav
Species: Human
Age: 17
Sex: Male
Sign: Pisces
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 175 pounds
Eyes: Blue
Hair: White
Dislikes: Overachievers, seeing other people suffer
Golem: Gorm – Gravity Lion
I often wonder what drives people to fight. Is it love? Hatred? A sense of honor? I feel none of these. Over and over I hear the stories of my father, my grandfather, and every Monstrom before them. How they fought for what they believed in. What does that even mean? What is it that I believe in? Maybe I will find those answers here, at the Academy.
Make no mistake—my skills in battle are unrivaled. Fighting has always come naturally to me, like… gravity. No wonder my Golem and I are so perfectly matched. I watch the others train like puppies, doing what the masters tell them from sunup to sunset, but Gorm and I would rather just kick back and have fun. What’s so wrong about that? I see how the others look at me and laugh, the lazy kid who cares about nothing. But the headmaster does not laugh. He insists on my training alongside the others day after day, thinking he can change me. I just smile and take it in stride. The old man has his work cut out for him.

Here's the next character in

Here's the next character in our lineup, Finn Simius Jr:

I come from a long line of water Golem creators, natural healers who carry out the grueling—and often thankless—task of caring for those in need. When they learned of my acceptance to the Academy, my father, mother and sisters were pleased to know I would be continuing the tradition, but my family and I have very different visions of my future. Though I am eager to immerse myself in my training, even greater is my desire to prove to the world that water Golems are far from weak.
My hunger for knowledge began as a child, and there are some today who would call me a genius. But without that hunger I could not have given life to such a remarkable Golem. You see, all water Golems are powerful healers, but they are useless in battle… until now. Cheeks is the first of his kind—not a typical water bubble Golem but a fierce puffer fish with an arsenal of offensive attacks. With Cheeks by my side, people will soon realize that water Golem creators wield tremendous power. Maybe then we will be given the respect we deserve.

Here's the next character,

Here's the next character, Delia Damsel!

There are no small fights. No insignificant victories. Every battle counts, and every opponent is worthy of my best. The stronger my adversary, the more diligently I push myself—training longer and harder than all the others. How else can I realize my true potential?

What I did was forbidden—attempting to fuse with my Golem in secret. I was badly burned but my Golem lives, and I wear my scars with pride. Rhine has no memory of our fusion, and for that I am thankful. The consequences of my actions are mine and mine alone, and keeping our secret ensures the Enforcers can never “dissolve” my dearest companion.

Rhine’s fire is more potent than any other fire Golem, and our bond is like no other. He is my ally and my protector, and in battle we come to life with the ferocity of an inferno, driven by the pure exhilaration of pushing the boundaries of our power. That connection is what makes us unstoppable, and I know he will never let anyone hurt me again. I know, too, that he can never know it was his fire that gave me my first burns.

Does anyone actually read

Does anyone actually read this? By that, I mean, does this sort of hype posting actually work, or does it have the opposite effect of putting people in the habit of tuning the game out? For example, I saw an article about this game on another site . . . the third time I scrolled past it. I am so in the habit of tuning it out here that the promo art doesn't register when I spot it elsewhere.

Game designers and developers are so in-touch with the community these days that this sort of perpetual "press release" style feels awkward and insincere coming from a small, unknown. There is no sense of engaging the community, just shoveling data at them.
