A rummy based dueling game

Ability cards I designed for the game
Player Board I designed for the game

Aloha Everybody,

This is my first post on BGDF and I am stoked to be here. I just recently fell in love with game design and the idea of making my own games. I went through a couple of ideas and continued to move through them until I finally found something that I think works.

I am developing a little card game based on little kids at a wizard school. The game is broken up into 2 phases, the "School" phase where players use a rummy like mechanic to learn spells and gain abilities, and then a "Duel" phase where players take their spells and abilities and lock wands to try to be the victor.

The only problem is I have a hundred questions about the game. I have it prototyped and I am lightly play testing it with people but I could really use some quality feedback.

Is this theme played out?
Is there room for another dueling card game?
Does the rummy mechanic make it un-interesting?
How many rules is too many rules for a simple little card game like this?

I would love to give somebody the written rules and see what they think of them, if it makes any sense at all.

Looking forward to any feedback available,
- Jesse

Wow, this looks great. Love

Wow, this looks great. Love the artwork.

The theme will definitely work with kids (though I'm kind of excited as well :), looking at the spells one could argue that it may be quite difficult for younger kids. With two phases the game requires you to plan ahead, which could be demanding, but exciting!, for kids.

I'd be happy to give the rules a look and share my thoughts with you. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Appreciative for the hand

Thanks so much, I am actually in the process of iterating the game a bit. I now have 2 very different version of the game with the same basic mechanics and premise. Once I boil them down a bit more, I would really like to send you the rules of each version and see which one feels more fun and makes more sense.

I'll let you know soon

More duels, YES PLEASE!!!

From the perspective of kids, aged under 13, when I was "actively" promoting "Quest AC" at conferences, the kids would all be like: "There's no dueling in this game?"

And I would get this question a lot. Each time I had to explain that the goal/purpose of the game is to COMPLETE Quests. The first player to complete a certain number of Quests would WIN the game...

BUT most kids said, they would prefer "Battling" their opponent.

So even if the genre is SUPER SATURATED... It's what kids WANT and LIKE! That's why I'm "converting" my Android game to a Table Top card game:

"It's what the PEEPs WANT!"

No but seriously there is a market for these games. And for example "Crystal Heroes" takes about 5 to 10 minutes to resolve. It's QUICKER than a game of Pokemon TCG (for example). So it could become popular with kids also!

Best of luck with your game!

Note: A because the game was SUPPOSED to be an Android game - it's still makes the game POSSIBLE in standard Table Top games - just with better/tighter rules... (And things like Math and scoring - which is again more math...) Some bright kids could probably handle the 13+ year old game (like a good math 10 year old - for example).

Great Insight

Thanks for the feedback, ill let you know when I make some progress.

Looks Cool

I would enjoy looking through the rules. PM me or give us a link!

Many hands make light work
