First one. The second isn't as legible, and the two lines of text are bunched up too closely.

It's funny...

Because I was getting all kinds of "slack" because the LHS (older) version was NOT *futuristic* enough. So I was told to try another font, different layout, etc.

And that person says they like the RHS better ... because it appears to be more *futuristic*.

And it was several people saying they did not like the "Tradewars" font.

So I am conflicted. There are also reasons I personally prefer the RHS (New) because of:

A> the color, it adds some better color definition to the image
B> it explains the reflection of the solar flare in the Soldier's helmet
C> it's smaller and will fit better on the side of a box
D> as mentioned above it's more *futuristic*

What I dislike about the LHS (old):

A> font looks dated and not futuristic
B> the medal in the background, with transparency, is not very good
C> the medal is too big - but looks crappy when you shrink it down
D> if the medal had no transparency, it would look awful (tried this)
E> color scheme of the logo is monochrome (grays only)

Anyhow...

The Right Hand one certainly

The Right Hand one certainly looks more futuristic, but it is a lot less legible and I don't know if that is due to the font or the size. I suspect a combination of both probably. Left hand one is much, much easier to read.

Have you tried other free

Have you tried other free sci-fi fonts at dafont.com, fontsquirrel.com, etc.? You can preview them before downloading. This is one I pulled off the sci-fi section on dafont.com and put on a random background.

A) The color of the image behind the font is nice, yes, but the font itself is less legible. The other one is much bolder and legible. It could be just the size, perhaps. Or maybe the font itself as it's much more slender.

B) No need to explain it .. in fact, I don't think this does explain it at all (Solar flare off a logo? nah). I just assume there is a sun somewhere in the foreground, behind us.

C) Maybe so, but still less legible.

D) As suggested, check out other futuristic fonts that are more legible.

My rule of thumb is to print it out, tack it to a game box, set it between a few other games, and view it from across the room. Does the box draw the viewer's attention, or does it merge into its surroundings? Is the title clearly legible?

I like the logo/positioning/size of the left one, but I agree that the font doesn't really say "sci fi". What about a combination of the two?

Fonts

The font on the left is more legible, but the font itself is rather blah; the font on the right is too thin and compressed, but more interesting.
So for that part, somewhere in between the two would work better for my taste: heavier/thicker/easier to read at a distance like the left, but a more styled font like the right.

The rest of the image hands down I'd vote for the right side.

Overall I choose LEFT. Left

Overall I choose LEFT.

Left side is legible and I can clearly read it, however the font is a little boring.

Right side is hard to read, but looks interesting. Also like the color and image behind the logo, makes it pop more.

Perhaps find a balance of both and find a new font?

Personally, I really like it. It seems to have more balance. Yes the font is smaller but the logo looks overall "nicer" to me.

cradewars

Is there something different about it from the one up above? Still hard to read, cramped font, and with the subtitle positioned too close to the title. Seen in a larger image, the title and subtitle fonts look mismatched. Viewed at a distance, my brain keeps registering it as, "cradewars," even though I know what it should say.

Working on it

Yeah maybe I can fix that... By adding some lettering to the LHS of the "T". I'll work on this tonight... And see if I can post up an update later.

But if it looks more like a traditional "T", that might make a difference.

Also the gradient makes it look more like a "C", I agree 100%... Will edit and see what you folks think.

Thanks for pointing that out!

This has the modified gradient (a 2nd time) and the correct "T". I also move the subtitle down a little - so that there is more space between the top title and subtitle... I also matched the 2 gradients - I think both are much cleaner - now... I also added a drop shadow to "Tradewars" to make it pop out of the remainder of the logo.

I can't possibly use the logo in the LHS

The logo looks too "dated" (LHS). The medal which is an Aerospace Medal of Honor, just doesn't look good, the font of "Tradewars" is TOO BIG and also "dated", the gradient bands just make for too much "noise".

But I've tried to address the issues brought up for the NEW logo.

Anyone have comments on the spacing, the new "T" and the gradients (As you can see this is raster layer - not type text). And so it's harder to modify "size-wise" but editing it to have a nicer "T" was not too difficult...

Is this a little "better" than the older version (again RHS)?

I have a complaint, as little as it may be. It seems that the image behind TRADEWARS, and HOMEWORLDS itself is off center to TRADEWARS. Its a battle of symmetry vs asymmetry, I feel like if the its supposed to asymmetrical then the image behind the logo should be far more to one side than just slightly off center like it is.

Ok, prepare for a little

Ok, prepare for a little waffle... I am a designer and concept artist by trade, so bear with me :)

Unfortunately you're making a classic design mistake which is overworking the design. If you look at what Jewel games above has done it stands out far more than either design you have so far. This isn't so much because what you have done is bad, but because the logo on the jewel design test is taken off of a busy background and has nothing else to detract from the important part... the words.

Your current designs are competing for attention with the extras you have added in the way of planet and sci fi borders. The other problem is the amount of contrast within the letters of the logos themselves, something else the Jewel Design suggestion has tackled. In their version the gradient within the letters has far less contrast, the brights aren't as bright compared to the darks, this makes the letters easier to read, especially when on top of the relatively flat dark background they used.

If your box artwork is finalised, so that planet and the ship cannot be moved, I suggest this. First, add some sort of surround to the entire logo that lifts it away from the background image. Next drop back the contrast within the letters, if you really like the RHS, which I do too by the way, also drop back the surrounding details which are competing. The reason the LHS is working slightly better is because its surrounding details are knocked back and the letters are larger meaning the contrast in the gradient isnt as much an issue, though it is still an issue.

Also, one of the main tests of any logo is how does it work as a flat graphic, as in no gradients, no drop shadows, no highlights, just flat black and white, or at the very least flat shapes.

Another thing on the RHS design, why are the things off centre? bear in mind where else your logo will be used, will that off centre approach work there, it doesn't really work here, given how your background image is, if anything that should be off centre to the right of the logo, not the left.

All in all, neither one of the designs are terrible, a combination of the two will work a little better and just the tweaking of a few details like colour, contrast and gradient etc.

Before you add all the details and texture like drop shadows, metal finish and the like, you really will do better to get a solid looking flat logo, then add texture.

As I say, not a bad design, at all... there are far far worse designs that make it to game shop shelves for sure... :)
