Use this thread if you have any questions on the February 2016 GDS. Particularly if you need examples of natural cycles that occur. You know, for inspiration.

Do the cards have to be

Do the cards have to be numbered 1-10? Or can I use whatever units I want?
(eg rock, paper, scissors, lizard, spock?)

Nice

I like this theme a lot. I've got all sorts of cycle ideas running round my head. :)

A question about the components: I assume the components restriction is up to two of (board, cards, tiles), rather than must use two? Is that right?

And what if the "cycle is

And what if the "cycle is natural", yet there is no low-beats-high mechanic. Would it still fit? Or low-beats-high is a pre-requisite?

Super fast GDS! I love

Super fast GDS! I love cycles.
I might be nit picking, but as others have noted, some points that need clarification:

mechanics: have to use a cycle in who beats who
-or-
mechanics: have to use a cycle

----------------------------and

theme: has to fit the cyclical mechanic
-or-
theme: explain the least > biggest relation

----------------------------and

components: use 2 of three, and nothing else
-or-
components: use at most 2 of three, and nothing else
-or-
components: of the three, use at most 2, everything else is fair game
-or-
components: of the three, use 2, everything else is fair game

----------------------------and

how big does the cycle have to be?
does RPS count as a cycle?

Good thing I looked here, I

Good thing I looked here, I was thinking about submitting a GDS entry using all components (cards, tiles and a board) but if 2 is the limit(max) I guess that will have to change.

Questions, Answered!

I tried to keep it brief so they were open to interpretation, but I'm very glad you all are asking for specific restrictions to help guide your designs. Here are comprehensive answers to the questions so far:

mechanics: have to use a cycle in who beats who

-or-

mechanics: have to use a cycle

More the latter, but a cycle with a set order. Like the seasons. Not like Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock where the dominance jumps across the circle

You do NOT have to use 1-10 as your numbers, in fact you shouldn't because doing so where 1 beats 10 doesn't make a natural sense from the order.

and

theme: has to fit the cyclical mechanic

-or-

theme: explain the least > biggest relation

While there is no strict theme restriction, if you are using a "makes sense" cyclic mechanic, it also makes sense to base your theme around this. Use your best judgement here. Let the voters be the judge.

and

components: use 2 of three, and nothing else

-or-

components: use at most 2 of three, and nothing else

-or-

components: of the three, use at most 2, everything else is fair game

-or-

components: of the three, use 2, everything else is fair game

and

how big does the cycle have to be?

No restriction, but I suggest big enough to clearly be a cycle and not a reimplementation of RPS.

Here's an example for you all of a deck with a natural cycle with no numbers:

36 unique cards. 3 cards each of the 12 months of a year, each subdivided into coloured seasons. On each card of the 3 cards of a month are two icons that represent steps of likely weather in that season (Snow + Rain <--> Rain + Cloudy <--> Cloudy + Sunny).

In this setup, the months naturally follow each other, so that January naturally follows December. Since time flows in one direction there is a succession to these months, in other words, a set order. The weather icons are also their own subcycle, as you can't go from Snow to Sunny in one step, nor can you go back from Sunny to Rainy.

Perhaps play involves playing cards in a month to change the weather, which must be done in a certain order, or progressing time to the next month, or whatever.

Hope that clears things up! I look forward to seeing the awesome entries this month!

**components: use at most 2 of three, and nothing else**

So we can't use pawns, dice, etc.?

Correct

That is correct.

Cards and tiles are some of the most flexible game components around, since they can act as counter and pawns, but also act as containers for a lot more information.

The idea is to focus on the single mechanic without ending up with a bloated design that uses extra components where a more elegant design could suffice.

Monday?

So, just to be clear, submitting an entry on Monday will be fine? Is there a specific last hour on Monday to keep in mind? =)

midnight

Get your entry in by the end of Monday the 8th. Wherever you are. 11:59 pm if you want to be a stickler. There's no prize here, nor is there a reason to track people based on their time zone. There are members here from all over the world, and I usually cut the deadline after every area of the world has gone through the day. So if you live near the dateline in the South Pacific, you'll be fine.

How do I edit

Very stupid question , how do I edit my entry if I closed the entry form page? I left out a fun idea and would like to modify

Closed, just reopen

If you've closed before submitting, you won't be able to get it back. I suggest writing the entry elsewhere and then copy-pasting it into the form.

If you did, and you just want to open it to modify the entry, there was a link you'd have been given after submitting hte form that you'd use to edit your entry.

If all else fails, resubmit the entry with your changes. I'll take only the most recent one.

Entry votes

The entry deadline is later today for a lot of people, and I'll post the entries as comments on the main contest thread after that. Once those are posted, there'll be a link in the main contest thread for voting via a google form.

You haven't missed anything :)
