Short version:.
Any ideas on one-time-use items that can be used in search missions in a zombie apocalypse scenario? So far I've come up with "extra fuel"..

Longer version :
I'm working on a co-op zombie apocalypse game. In short there are three types of challenges: combat, search and engineering. Players may find items that help them with these challenges. There are two types of items: multi-use (baseball bat) and one-time-use (handgrenade).
My problem is that I have a hard time coming up with one-time-use items that will help you in search missions.

It depends somewhat on what

It depends somewhat on what they're searching for.

Searching for people: An infection identifier, which allows you to test a potential recruit and euthenize them if they are infected but not yet showing symptoms. Without it, there's some chance for every new recruit that they become full-blown zombies AFTER you've brought them into the base. (A permanent item of Quarantine Chamber could also help with this.)

Searching for guns and ammo: Metal detectors with limited battery power.

Searching for food: Single use cold packs which make it more likely you get your food back to base without being spoiled.

If you're searching for

If you're searching for survivors, a flare-gun could be a useful item:
It can either act as a signal to attract non-zombified people (presumably zombies are too stupid to look for the source of the flare), or it could be used as a moderately powerful once-off weapon.

Glow-sticks (either act as markers or to illuminate dark areas) - I believe that they are used by real-life spelunkers while exploring caves.

Fire extinguishers, scuba gear, or oxygen-tanks might enable players to temporarily access areas that are normally dangerous or inaccessible (i.e on fire, under water or filled with toxic gas or smoke), and be used up in the process (if represented by cards, you could put a mini use-track on the card indicating how much longer the item may be used for).
