Hello BGDF!

I must admit, this is my first post...although, i have been reading, watching and learning from this community for some time. BGDF has been a valuable resource and I am deeply grateful for all i have learned. That said......I hope to give back!

Here's a little bit about me.....I'm a professor by day and game designer by night, I live in Columbia, Missouri with my three splendid daughters. I was Inspired by Eurostyle games in the late 90s and became a fan of legends like Reiner Knizia, Klaus Teuber, Martin Wallace and Andreas Seyfarth. I unveiled my prototype of Feudum at GenCon 2014 and was thrilled to meet and gain insight from folks like Eric Lang, Mike Eliott, Bruno Faidutti and Jamey Stegmaier.

I am excited that the game has been hailed as "articulate and inventive," and appears on quite a few "watch" lists within the BoardGameGeek community. I was thrilled when i made Rahdo's Top 10 Most Anticipated Games list, and I am on the heels of my first Kickstarter Launch: November 10th, to be exact. If you're curious, you can see the page at http://www.oddbirdgames.com/feudum or visit the facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/feudum.

Anyway, I look forward to interacting with this community more in the days ahead. Thanks for making me feel at home.

Right on!

I am new here myself and as far as I can tell one of the greatest features here is the connectivity of designers at every conceivable level of experience. I am just starting out with physically manifesting prototypes to playtest, but I have been thinking about them more than half my life. I am sure this is a common story here and that is encouraging.

I wish you much success on the upcoming publishing campaign, and I will definitely be checking out what you have to offer (if it's good enough for, Rahdo...I am in!)

Really really nice

Really really nice presentation and visual style.

The goal seems a bit high for a game without minis though.

Wow! That's one of the most

Wow! That's one of the most gorgeous games I've ever seen. Incredible job on the art.

Also, that was perhaps the best rules summary video I've seen. Well done.

$49K is a pretty steep goal, but with the hype you've apparently built up, I think you can hit the mark.

Do you have any video of people actually playing the game? The rules summary is great, but it would be really informative to see people actually taking turns and making decisions.

Good luck!

Feudum = wow!

Greetings and welcome, Mark. :)

Best of success with Feudum! With the feedback you'd received from professionals, and the copious feedback you can pick up from here, I'm sure your KS project will help keep Feudum in the running as a project success. I'll be watching, for sure.

Welcome to BGDF!

Before I welcome you...

We should clear the air about designers "who come to BGDF looking for backer support". We get a lot of designers that pop-up, write about THEIR game and how they want to KS-it and are looking to "market" the game and support their KS.

Now while I understand your KS preview is still prior to a KS, I urge you to "contribute" to the BGDF community.

What that means is discussing topics that go beyond YOUR game. Get involved with what other people are doing and talking about.

One-trick ponys that are simply looking to garner support don't benefit much from our community and really don't contribute a lot either.

So if you really want a BGDF "welcome" get into conversations and topics with the other designer and post your comments, ideas, suggestions, feedback on topics "out there" in the fora.

Cheers.

Beautiful Game

Mark,

You have a visually-stunning game. The only piece of advice I can offer you, and you no doubt heard this countless times already...play-test your game as much as humanly possible! Please keep us in the loop, so we may support you when your KS launches.

Cheers,
Joe

I agree with questccg. OP did

I agree with questccg. OP did a very nice, well-written post here, much better than most others that shows up and make their first post about their kickstarter, but I would really have preferred if he had spent at least a few minutes in the last 21 months since registering here on discussing game design here.

The greatest weakness with bgdf has become that so many seems to see it primarily as a way to do free marketing of their projects (which mostly means kickstarters).

This is a problem on many other forums for game design (boardgames or digital games) but in my experience it is much worse here than elsewhere. Perhaps because there are no clear rules and no moderation? There are no attempt as far as I can see to confine promotions to paid ads or at least isolate them in their own subforum (and, preferably, excluded from the sidebar) where they belong.

I doubt that posting kickstarter-links to fellow designers works very well, but I guess when it is free anyway and likely to bring in a handful of new backers with a tiny chance that some of them will spread the word it is something worth doing, so it will not end as long as it is allowed on a site (and has no cost).

Not exactly accurate

Umm although there are very few rules, I am a Moderator. I watch for SPAM, BOTS, Foul Language and try to make sure everyone "gets along". We've only had about three (3) incidents where people (other designers) felt in some way "slanted".

And I do post comments to encourage people to contribute MORE to the community here at BGDF.

But that doesn't mean everyone is interested and willing to do so. I can only "encourage" so much participation... And I've done so in a few threads, especially ones from new users who post about their KS efforts.

While we generally want people to feel like this is a "welcoming" community that you can post about YOUR game and get answers/feedback and comments for it... We should perhaps encourage more participation with the other designers and their challenges.

I don't want to single-out anyone but even some long standing designers on BGDF do this also... They appear once a month and post a couple threads in their Blog on a specific thread - and that's their contribution to BGDF...

As you seek advice on your game - seek out to help others if you want to be an up-standing BGDF member.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Cheers.
