Trouble adding theme to a mechanic

I've come up with a mechanic that I think could be a lot of fun.

It would be a dexterity worker placement game.

Players bid for turn order, with last turn being the most desired.

They then flick their workers onto the board.

You are allowed to bump into your own and other players pieces. If you knock another player's piece off the board, they get it added back to the supply to use again, if you knock your own piece off the board it is lost.

Once everyone has flicked all their pieces, you would perform whatever action is dictated by the spots they finally landed on.

This means spots are going to be open for multiple people, so I was considering making the spots act like bull's-eyes, where the closer you are to the center, the more rewarding that spot is.

The problem I'm having is coming up with a good theme so that I can flesh out the mechanics further.

The only real idea I've had is something like Black Friday at Wal Mart. Players would have a list of items to purchase, and they'd have to flick their workers to different areas of the stores to get them. I feel this theme works well with the ability to push other people out of the way, and the kind of chaotic nature of a black Friday sale. However, I think that theme may relegate it to only being a holiday game, which is not what I want.

Any ideas for other themes I could attach to a dexterity based worker placement game?

How about a super hero

How about a super hero theme?

Players are controlling teams of super heroes who are all vying to be the one to save the day.

Locations could be the bridge, the rooftop, downtown, etc.

The super heroes that end up at the location get a share of the "glory" which could be the game's victory points.

Or the flicking phase could just be the first part. Perhaps in the second part the heroes on a location have to do battle with a villain. For this battle, you do do another flicking mini game or create a dice based combat system to deal with it.

And each team could be made up of different heroes. Some would be better against different villains and better at completing different tasks.

Basically, each player controls a different team of Avengers.

The world needs more super hero games.

I really like that idea.

I really like that idea. Definitely a space worth exploring a lot more.

Yeah I like Gabe's

Yeah I like Gabe's suggestion.

I guess the overall thematic element is that players are competing for space in some way, where you can displace someone who gets in the space first.

So like the black friday and superheroes examples, competing for physical space.

You could also be eg competing for space in a petri dish/lab space of some sort

Or competing for space in a social media war? (I like this one, I don't think board games grasp the modern world enough, so this has potential as a new market niche)

What about a stock game?

Stock exchange type game?

The center is the highest bid to sell, trade or buy the best goods?

Players are buyers who set up their stock by picking their cards from the pile.

Probably a few draw piles that have various prices, overhead margins, years of sell, trade or buy profits?

Draw piles ideas:

1: Corn
2: Live stock
3: Gas
4: Medical
5: Technology
6: Gold
7: Silver
8: Platinum
9: Pharmaceuticals
10: Fish
11: Flowers

Or make up your own.

10 cards each for each category in the center on the board and players flick their workers to the center to see what they get.

Players then save their card (s) I would say flick worker chits three times to create their portfolio. More flicks to the center would create a bigger portfolio but the out come would make it more of a challenge to handle their stock in the long run. This could be a good or a bad thing. But you never know what the player will go for during the course of the game.

The game can have a set timer of say like 5 minutes on the sand timer to allocate the players buy, sell or trade market. The center pile would then flip over one card from each pile. Players can bid for those center cards after the bid of 5 minutes. Players can place stakes of a color card or a non colored card that says buy, sell or trade. Players can then outbid the other player cards for more product or sell their trade for more money to come in for more profit that have a higher sell or buy offer.

To win the game or other players;
Players need to have a set margin of what they want to win with their companies they are stocking up for and manage their stock for the duration of the game with out bailing out of the stock and end up in debt. Center cards will be flipped over after every bid of the placer chits have been flicked. So with each flick, the center card is flipped over and placed on top fo the first , second and so forth card making the center deplete. But players can save those cards from being depletion buy trading or selling the top card that was flipped with other resources in their hand or trade off from other players for prices that have the same amount of buy , sell or trade or sell all stock card.

Ideas sort of got jumbled up. But I think you know where I am coming from.

These are ideas you can all play with.

How about gold rush. Spots

How about gold rush. Spots are places to buy tools, or get food or shelter, and then of course spots along the river or in the mountains to pan for the gold. There can be markers in the collection spots for the gold, when you flick it out of the way you get to look under it - it will have tool requirements and payout. You pay the requirements and get the payout, or you draw and place a new collection token and put the old one back in the bag if you can't afford it. It is not legal to click into the collecting areas if your health levels are too low, but there is limited space in the public houses. The tool spots where you can buy tools will have a limited supply that refreshes every so often. Whoever is closest to the center after all the flicking gets first pick.

I really like the Gold Rush

I really like the Gold Rush theme... Jumping claims by bumping out other players tokens is perfect...

Or take hints from sports and go with a basketball theme, or some kind of fantasy multi team sport. Players would jockey for position and you could have certain combinations of spaces allow certain special plays or grant an advantage.

fishing

There could be fishing on the ocean.

Flick littel boats and there could be different kind of fish and crab to be cathced. You need special equipment and crew to catch them.

After some thought I would prefer a fishing contest on a lake with lures and bait. I wouldn't make the worker placement part too big as a dexterity element will turn down heavy gamers.

Very nice idea, but...

Very nice idea, but... take a look at SAFRANITO before proceeding, so you do not end with similar mechanics by mistake.

Intresting start

Sounds like it might fit the same theme as:

-----Theme One------
"Monsters in the City"

Rampage (Old NES video game)
King of Tokyo
Monster Bashing

I love the idea of tossing "monsters" into spaces that destroy parts of a city or landing in spaces that activate abilities that gain points for being in other spaces. and extra points for knocking other monsters out of a space... hehehe sounds like great fun!

-----Theme Two------
"Alien Invasion"

Dropping little green men or round and flat UFOs on "Cow/Farm/town/military base" spaces and such...

-----Theme Three------
"Something with Monkeys"

Like from the "barrel-o-monkeys" fame. Landing the plastic monkeys on fruit spaces and not on veggie spaces might be just right for a younger audience.

-----Theme Four------
Pirates!

The board is the Island and finding the treasure is the target. Tossing several odd shaped things from pirate fame comes to mind... The hat/hook/bird (something like bouncy erasers) might work for younger audience. One player might even toss the treasure every round so it is in a "random" place and they might get points if no one lands in that space that round.

---------------------

In short I think this mechanic you have can work for lots of things and I hope to see one in print someday!

"Worker placement by Flick"

I see many levels possible with custom dice that have icons that effect things based on where they land and what is rolled.
