This might shock you.

I feel happy and inspired to create more chapter decks for Dymino Monsters, get back to writing our Beyond The Horizon sci-fi 4th wall comedy pun web series. So excited to be writing Season 1 Part 2 Episode 14. Can't wait to get to Season 2 Part 1 manuscripts.

Time for another playtest

Hey Super,

Don't give up on your cup game... Maybe if it can be played within a MINUTE, you could submit the "mini-game" concept to "Minute to Win It"... Just another venue for quick, small, challenging TACTICAL games which require manual dexterity.

I'm certain @Stormy can help you write the rules to the game... But they need to be pretty simple if it's to be a "mini-game" on that game show.

Uhm. The rules are already worked out. They are both in my Water Cooler and Prototype fourms. They are simple and if you need me to further explain, let me know.

You don't understand...

You may know the "rules" and maybe you can show a friend how to play... But you need to write RULES which you can send to ANYONE and they can read it and understand HOW to PLAY your game.

Just having two (2) threads does not constitute a Rulebook.

Speak with your Uncle @Jesse and tell him you would want to sit down with him and hash out a Rulebook for the "Cup 'N' Bowl'" game idea.

Rules are different than just you explaining how to play... @Stormy should be able to teach you how to write rules with the proper FORMAT and all of the content needed to allow other people to play your game.

There's no need...

Uh. Sorry to say, but there is no need for a rule book. The game is simple enough and yes, explaining how to play the game counts as rules. And if there is a set limit for how long a rule book needs to be; please let me know, your royal highness.

Ho Hum...

The rules can be written to fit one (1) 8.5" x 11.0" standard sheet of paper... The older games like the Game of Life or Snakes & Ladders used to come with one sheet of paper with all the rules.

So yeah it may only take one sheet of paper. Not too much, but it could be clear and concise to what it takes to write down the rules.

I'm not saying you have to... But if you want to share your game with the world, well you need to actually sit down and write those rules (even if it is only one page - maybe even less).

I don't mean to come off as rude. Really, thank you for the feedback Kristopher, but how dare you tell me, the creator of the game, that I don't understand my own rules and game.

My team and I will write a rule book when we get to it, but currently there is no need for a rule book because the only people play testing it are my team members and they know the rules. Also the game is not done yet thus there is no need for a rule book.

I get you and everyone else has a way of thinking, but the way we do it is just fine for us. Equally, I get you're trying to help, but don't tell people that they don't understand their own game. It just comes off as rude.

Sorry... you seem to have misunderstood (but I get it...)

I didn't mean you don't understand your game or rules...

I meant you didn't understand what I had wrote.

I'm just trying to get you to understand that as a "Game Designer" one of the steps in designing games is writing rules. Rule writing can come in various formats -- but usually follow a certain pattern.

But I get it now ... you are not yet ready to write rules ... because the game is still being playtested by your team. And since they already know and understand the rules, there is no need for a rulebook for them.

I'm just saying if you want people around the world to play your game, when you are ready, you need to take the time to write the rules out. And then you can share your wonderful game with people everywhere.

That's what I think you did not understand: if you want people everywhere in the world playing your game... you will need a rulebook.

Edit: or a "rulesheet" which is just a paper describing how to setup the game, the goal of the game, how to play a turn, a sequence to follow, a way of scoring points and lastly a way to determine a winner.

These are elements of a rulesheet (or rulebook)... and you will have to figure them all out when you write one.

No worries... Just trying to help you learn the basics of good designing...

Writing down rules is a tool

Imho, writing the rules in an early stage can help the designer.

Just to keep documentation for self study.

One can keep track of the progress of the game this way. And you can look back and undo changes. You will less likely end up in design circles.

You never know what mistakes you might encounter. Simply by reading your own rules.

Right now, explanation of the game might be simple and a page. But getting it even easier and shorter is a nice side quest.

This is why I write down the rules. Even if it is a 2 rules game.
