I am struggling to come up with a name for my card game, the theme is slime monsters and the mechanics revolve around colors. What is even harder is when i come up with a good name, it is already taken by a professional game..

At what step in your development do you come up with a name for your game?

Brainstorm a lot

I think you need to get a lot of possibilities on a list.
Maybe you can think of some combinations as well.
Try to get to a dozen or 2.
Then check for which ones where taken.

But to be honest. You don't have much to work with?

Try this

https://anytexteditor.com/game-name-generator

Play around in it.

Select if you want the keyword in front or back.
You can refresh while using the same keywords, and thus get more options.

Slime Wars TCG

"Slime Wars" is only a YouTube Channel with 2 Girls on it... Check it out! Nothing on BGG and nothing at "www.slimewars.com" (well the domain is parked). Pretty sweet that you could get that name without too much competition.

I did find an Online Video Shooter with the name but no CARD or BOARD games... Searching for "Slime Wars Game".

I also found "Slime CCG" and a Mobile Game called "Slime War". Searching for "Slime Wars card game"

But I agree with @X3M's suggestion of pulling out a bunch of synonyms for whatever you WANTED as a game name and go from there...

I have no clue what you WANTED as a name... So it's hard to give suggestions given that we don't know the CONTEXT of your game's name (other than Slimes).

BTW "Slime Wars TCG" could be "Trading Card Game" or "The Card Game"! Whatever works best for you... And the nearest competition is "Slime CCG". And that's a bit further away from my suggestion. Check it out!

Hello Jedite1000

When I am thinking of a game name the name of the game usually comes in to play from the game mechanics or words I've used for on the board.

I also go to game stores : i.e. video game store, board and card game stores, or even from books and movie titles just to name a few ideas, suggestions.

As I browse these locations, I mix and match titles that sound interesting for one of the above ideas that help me.

If a name that comes to mind or several, I use the internet to see if the name has already been taken, then I would keep one of the words or a few depending on the title or phrase for a location or encounter and start over. It doesn't take me long to come up with something that fits the design I have in mind.

Like yesterday, we had a customer playing with his new toy car and just that sparked an idea for a rally car game.

I went to the office, drew up a rally track , a start and finish and grabbed 2 d6's.

Today, before work I'd grabbed six cars to playtest the game during our slow period at work, I then showed my staff member.

On the board there is drift and overtake on banked turns.

Knowing that the game is about rally racing and added the words drift and overtake, the name of the game came right from the words. I have titled it Rally : Overtake.

I haven't checked to see if the title has been taken but it's a very simple 2 player racing roll and move game. No extra cards, actions, etc. Just roll the dice and move to the corresponding spot, drift or overtake your opponent.

Since there were 6 cars, 3 cars per player, that's how many times you race around the track.

The track is 3 card board flats drawn together. That's there is to play the game. And that's just how one of the ways I name my games.

Dye you slime, dye!

Dye, you slime! Dye!

I usually brainstorm, collect words that describe your game, or have some connection to it.

Fisrt I think of a work name for my game, so its easier to tell people about it, then you have enough time to think a final name.

Game Name

I call my games super simple, generic terms.

I have one with meeples that are in a circle formation, and you simultaneously play cards to eliminate each other in a last man standing kind of thing. I call it "Circle." It may have a better name at any given time. Supervillains Anonymous I think is the most recent "Name" of it. But my Google Drive folder is called "Circle" ..and that's what I tend to call it.

Same thing with "Cube Game" .. it's a hacker themed engine builder currently officially titled Zero Day. It used to not be hacker themed. It used to have more things, and less things, but it always had cubes. In my heart, it's Cube Game.

Call it what you want. Slime Game works great, and if a better name comes up later, even better!
