Well I've got to admit that I visited today an FLGS about 45 minutes away from my home. The usual people running the store were NOT there... But I met the brother who usually works on Saturdays and I had not seen him for YEARS!

Anyways we got to discussing how their interest in Board Games had gone down due to the fact that not many NOVEL games have been launched recently (or in the last few years).

I agreed with him... Nothing from my side except the DICE.

He shared with me the ONLY "New" and "Innovative" Game was "Vampire Survivors" on PC (Steam), Free on Android (Google Play) and available on a bunch of platforms too.

It's a ROGUE-LIKE game. So you play 15 minutes if you are lucky and then DIE.

I HATE these type of games where you can't SAVE and CONTINUE or "RESTART A LEVEL" etc. etc. 15 minutes and you battle a BOSS and if you beat him another BOSS (same one) appears in any case ending your existence.

Anyhow ... If you are the least bit curious as this game has won a TON of awards for being the best game in 2022 and have been ported to a bunch of platforms like Steam, Playstation, XBox and even the Switch.

Take a look and tell me what you think!

Cheers.

Note #1: Oops I forgot to SHARE the Google Play link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.poncle.vampiresurvivors

You can ALSO BUY a copy from Steam if you prefer:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1794680/Vampire_Survivors/

It is available on XBox, PlayStation and Switch too... Search for "Vampire Survivors".

What!? You just discovered

What!? You just discovered Vampire Survivors NOW! You are at least 5 years late to the party, I think they have 3-4 expansions now, including the Castlevania expansion. They are even pulling out a new game, a deck builder I think, called Vampire Crawler. Its getting out soon.

The game was so popular that everybody copied the concept in different ways. My only complaints I remember is that the levels are not that interesting, but its hard to do so with a monster swarming mechanism. The ending is also flat: grim reaper arrives and you die.

I even though of making a deck building card game where you battle wave of monsters. The game is basically an engine building game. You try to combo items together that can fusion, or complement each other pretty well.

Its the perfect type of game for me as game length is 30 minutes, around an hour of play time to finish a stage. It also played well with a fighting stick as it is basically a 1 button game. I mean, the game would have been playable on Atari, who could have though that.

I think the android platform is limited, there is no updates and expansions. So play it there to see if you like it, then migrate to another platform. If you like the genre but not that game specifically, there are dozens and dozens of other survivor games. Ask AI to find those games.

Another one that comes to my mind: "Ball X Pit" is a game in the same genre. There is aiming, but the character attacks automatically. You collect power up and make yourself a build by combining power ups in different ways. The city management is weird and not very interesting for me, but the core game is a variation good enough to stand on its own. Again, a match last 20-30 minutes and you can adjust speed if you want.

Enjoy!

For someone who refuses to install the STEAM Client

Yeah I REFUSE to install the "STEAM Client"... It's BLOATWARE. I hate sh!t like that. I'm not much into video games except for playing games that I enjoyed when I was YOUNG (20s) and never completed because I didn't know what to do in them.

So right now I am playing "Earthbound" on the SNES, Starflight 1 (an old PC game that I never completed either) and someone suggested Lufia on the SNES (@Westmass kudos for Chris to share with me that game)...

I don't really like "Vampire Survivors"... But like if you knew about this game, why did you not bring it up??? I'm the first one to even MENTION the game?!?!

There are a bunch of expansions for the Mobile version too... But you have to PAY for them and I don't like the BASE game very much. It's too hard, you can't save and I like games with progression ... Not Rogue-like.

Anyhow... You get what I mean.

Sincerely.

Just to be CLEAR...

The game was released in 2022. So we are in 2026... That's like 4 Years and yeah the mobile game has a bunch of expansions you can buy and play too. Not just the platform games or PC Version (on Steam).

Like I said... Nobody mentioned it. It was only when talking with Giancarlo that he said the industry has been a bit boring nothing "exciting" with the exception of "Vampire Survivors". Nobody has talked about it anywhere that I've seen.

This proves that the "Water Cooler" Section of the Forum should be used more to discuss the novel ideas and concepts that come out from the gaming industry. Video games, Card games, Board games, RPG games, etc. etc. We should discuss those matters more.

Don't be shy... If you've seen or heard of something NOVEL... Please share!

Best.

Please share with us more such information

I had never heard of it before last Wednesday (15 April 2026). And Giancarlo even shared with me the image and said that the game had won several awards and got a lot of accolades.

This is going to sound stupid... But where do you find such news??? I mean on my YouTube feed ... I get FOX News and Politics (what's going on and the news for various news-worthy information) ... But not what are popular games and how they are unique or different, etc. etc.

I don't usually search for said information... But it could be nice to discuss it in the "Water Cooler" Section... Just to share what's going on and what's new to the scene...

Anyhow ... I don't think this is a BIG request. But it could be nice to share with our visitors more about what is going on in the Gaming Industry.

Like I said, I for one don't know where to go when it comes to such news...

Steam! bloatware? I am

Steam! bloatware?

I am currently running steam on my old laptop from 2013 and sometimes I start steam in the background expecting to play a game (the boot time is long, I don't have an SDD), and I have not experimented slowdown doing any other tasks. Of course, not all games run on that old computer, especially not with the proton emulator if the game is windows only. If you do not start the process, it cannot slowdown your computer. If you are short in disk space, that is another story. Still there are many games under 500 megs on steam.

I am not sure if I posted on this forum my idea to make a Survivor deck building game. It did not get any feed back here and/or board game geek. I imagine that is because people did not know the video game in the first place. If you can search my post, you might be able to find it. Again, not sure on which forum I posted.

This game has progression, but maybe no the type you are thinking. A game basically last 30 minutes of play. Approximately 1 hour if you add chest and menu selection. You do not stop the game in that time period, so you must be willing to play 30-60 minute. Once completed, you unlock new character, items, etc. That is the progression that is saved. So for somebody ADHD like me, that is perfect, it follows the play and forget philosophy. I can get back in to the game 2 years later without having to remember what I wanted to do.

The industry is effectively not creative because we are in time of crisis, so it is not taking risk, and doing the thing that works (see Phil Spencer's letter). But in a creative industry, that should not be the case. Also production cost and time are so high for AAA games (about 5 years), that you cannot take risk anymore. This is why for example everybody is copying slay the spire, it reusing bullet prof concepts.

I never understood the water cooler section, is it like an out of topic section?

I think I learned from Vampire Survivor because my GF saw it on Xbox or Windows PC, I am not sure. I think Microsoft asked or helped the game to be released on xbox.

Xbox and probably PC windows store, will display new games getting released on the store or on game pass. So its one way to discover them. Else, I guess you could ask AI to pull you out the most innovative video games that was released during the last year.

Vampire Crawlers is coming out in a few days, its a deck builder, you might like it. Look at the trailer.

By the way, we can probably

By the way, we can probably exchange user profile names, or create friendship on steam so that we know games that we are each other playing. Possibly even looking at other people's reviews.

I used to play more on xbox than steam, but with my glasses problem since January, it seems now to be the other way around. I prefer that because I purchased many games that I have not played yet.

I have seen yesterday Vampire

I have seen yesterday Vampire Crawler, it just got released. It looks like a mix of vampire survivor and slay the spire. Its a deck building game, but the card play is much faster as you need to defeat waves and waves of monsters.

I found back the thread I was talking about, it was posted in 2022. You even submitted a post in that thread:

Idea: Vampire Survivor: the deck building game

It's NOT called Vampire Crawlers...

It's called "Vampire Survivors: the Board Game" released in 2026 and crowdfunded:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/447125/vampire-survivors-the-board-game

That BGG Link/URL leads to a KS page:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/152730994/vampire-survivors-the-boa...

So it's NOT "Vampire Crawlers"... I don't know where you got that NAME. But it is incorrect.

It's $64 USD + $25 USD to ship to Canada. Which means that this VERSION of the game is $89 USD ~= $122 CAD. Not exactly inexpensive. Pretty pricey if you ask me. But then again, I re-priced my OWN "Dual Dice" (DD) to be more affordable and have premium packaging.

Everything is more expensive these days. 10% Tariffs on Board Games made in China. Which is LESS than 17.5% Tariffs on Custom Dice made in China... I don't know why?! Should be 10% too...

If they drop the Tariffs on Dice to 10% ... Maybe I will sell to the USA knowing I only make 10% ... At 17.5% Tariffs, I make only 2.5% ... Fnck that sh!t... It's not even worth my time or effort to sell to the USA.

But yeah over 9,000 Backers and $500,000+ USD in Funding.

Goes to show you that the Board Game Market is not dead. Just recovering from 30% Tariffs on China just 6-Months ago. I know because I shipped DD at 30% since I was making 90% via KS. But the sales to US Distribution or US FLGSs is now impossible. So ... I am ignoring the USA market and focusing on Canada.

For the moment. We'll see in the future.

They really made a board game

They really made a board game out of it. Nice.

Vampire Crawler is a real deck building video game:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https:...

maybe this link is better, google is adding prefix and suffix:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3265700/Vampire_Crawlers_The_Turbo_Wi...

I played it yesterday, my friend got 2/3 of the achievements in one day. One of the interesting differences with slay the spire is that you can put gems on your cards changing their behavior. Also you can build up combos by playing cards in casting cost numerical sequence. So if the card cost are 0,1,2 each successive card is boosted (more damage for example).

As for the board game, its not just deck building, they seem to have decided to have a minimap too.

I played vampire crawlers 2-3

I played vampire crawlers 2-3 sessions so far, and I was not particularly hooked. I do not feel much compelled to play the game like the original game. Maybe the card play is too simple for me. Also the fact that playing them in numeric sequence is better, I think it dictate how to play your cards, reducing the amount of decision and thinking. The strategy is more in the card selection than the card play.

Also the dungeon crawling aspect is very limited and offers little choices, you could kill less monsters, but that means less exp, therefore, more complicated to win later. So its not even a risk reward situation, its kill all monsters, this is the way.

For people not playing deck building games, maybe that could be perfect. It was the case of my friend. So far, I will be way more interested to play slay the spire.
