Cooperative Card Game - Thoughts?

I recently created a game not too long ago but it was a bit derivative of my prior game (Never Seven Nor Eleven). Because it was a bit derivative, I decided to place that game aside (although it is a nice game, if I do say so myself) and try to create something outside of my comfort zone - A card game.

For this game, I wanted it to be non-competitive. Everyone is on the same team; No stress. Just fun.

The set-up is simple: People are stranded on an island with an active volcano that is going to erupt. The players have to get as many of those players off of the island as possible.

There are two decks of cards: The stranded people and the "action" cards that will get them off of the island. The action cards form a sentence: EX. "[Young] [Male] [Caucasian] [Scientist] [wears glasses]." There has to be five cards to form a sentence and some cards may fit one sentence but not another. The players take turns trying to place an action card down to form the sentence. (EX. The first player has to place the first word, and not just any word in a sentence). They get two chances (two turns around the table) to form the sentence.

If they can form any complete sentence at all, play stops and five "stranded" cards are then flipped over and the players see if they've 'saved' any of the players by matching the sentence with the stranded people.

If even one stranded person is saved, everyone takes a new action card and the old ones are discarded. The people who are saved are placed aside and the ones that weren't are placed back into the bottom of the pile.

If they do not form a sentence or save no one, then the last person who could have put down a card picks up all of the action cards played.

The game is over when everyone is saved (everyone gets off the island in time) or one person runs out of cards (the volcano erupts and people were still on the island).

Anyway, I thought that it was a neat idea. It had a slightly educational and cooperative bend to it. Could be for middle-school age or adults who are young-at-heart.

The island volcano setting could obviously be changed or altered ("How many people can you save from Pompeii? From Titanic? From Atlantis?").

I don't have a lot of resources to test it out and am not proficient with card games so perhaps someone who does know card game mechanics would know what the challenges would be for this proposal or if it has been done already ("You just described such-and-such!").

Just the THEME needs to be changed...

Hello @Steve, the THEME of this game sounds exactly like "Survive!" or "Survive: Escape from Atlantis":

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2653/survive-escape-from-atlantis

The ORIGINAL game was made in 1982 and was called "Survive!" only:

https://boardgamegeek.com/image/9388973/survive-escape-from-atlantis

But the game is different than yours. ONLY the THEME is IDENTICAL:

Survive! wrote:
You are trying to rescue people stranded on an island as it slowly sinks into the ocean. Hex Game Tiles have a backside which tell you what you have to do when you draw a tile. The first player who rescues all of his stranded people wins. Everyone loses if the Mountain Terrain VOLCANO ERUPTS... That's one of the remaining tiles when most of the island has already sunk.

Aside from the THEME... Your game is different.

But eliminate "Island Volcano" and "Atlantis" as those are THEMES of the "Survive!" Game.

I don't understand the 2 Rounds to form a "Sentence" or one of the character left stranded.

You say you have 2 Decks: Words and Characters. Fine.

But do you have a HAND??? Because I am wondering how Player #1 decides to PASS because he has nothing that matches any of the Characters in-play... How does he get NEW "Word" Cards to try to match (for his 2nd Round)?

The rest I understand: Co-op, Card Game, 2 Decks.

I have an ALTERNATE "Theme": Saving People from a Burning Building. It could be branded as a "Fireman" Game and there could be FLOORS. Floors determine the amount of "Characters" that need to be saved (eg. 10 Characters = 10 Floors or 5 Characters = 5 Floors), etc. etc.

Anyways if you address my question, maybe I can help you out with more feedback. Like I said, so far the THEME is the only thing that needs to be changed because it's simply so SIMILAR to "Survive!".

Cheers!

Note #1: When you say Player #1 puts down the FIRST "Characteristic" of a character, you said that is done FACE DOWN??? Is that correct?? Why? Because it means that everyone is drawing BLINDLY and HOW(?) is that supposed to LEAD to matching a character!?!?!?

I'd get it is Player #1 plays a Word from his HAND which he leans towards one of the Characters and the REMAINING players TRY (it may not be possible that Round) because of positioning ... To MATCH the correct Words into a character.

I don't get how BLIND selection WORKS (in your game)!

Funny blind selection was a bit of a issue for me too (In one of my projects - the Mystery Card Game) and I concluded that the opponent gives away partial information which could be a BLUFF and players choose according to the information that they have which Units to play.

Double-Blind drawing works for my game because players have ANOTHER source of info.

I don't see the SAME for your game. So I need some more information if you want some more feedback. Again hoping to contribute some valuable insight and feedback. Just need some answers as to HOW(?) you plan to play your game.

General Thoughts

That's not really a sentence; that's more like 5 adjectives.

A fail to see strategy in this. If you don't have the correct part of speech, what can you do? If you have several options for the correct part of speech, what's the difference between them? However, this may be helpful to teach young people parts of speech though. ("You just played an adjective, but we just had our noun, so what do you think we need now? That's right! A verb!")

Purely luck, or if you're accepting lists of adjectives as sentences, then impossible to fail.

What makes a sentence "match" a stranded person? If any words on the person's card are in the sentence? Also, if the people aren't revealed until after the sentence is made, then the sentence couldn't consciously be made in such a way to save people, precluding strategy. This can be resolved by flipping the 5 stranded people before starting to form the sentence. This doesn't seem like a strategy-intensive game, but kids can at least understand "Oh, I need to save the fat man, better use my 'fat' card."

If an equal number of cards return to the collective players' hands as are spent, then the players collectively aren't running out of cards. I presume that players take turns being the one to lay the first word of the sentence, and that means they would take turns being the last player as well, meaning they would take turns picking up the cards from failed sentences as well. This means that, as long as players start with more cards in hand than there are players, no player will ever run out of cards. The solution is to make players start with fewer cards than there are players or make the same player always take the cards from a failed sentence
