Blogs are for regaling others
Blogs are for regaling others with pithy insight into life as a game designer, so if that's what you plan on doing with this blog, you're on the right track. Welcome to the 3rd incarnation of the BGDF!
Oh my. I don't have any pithy
Oh my. I don't have any pithy insights to share or even anything concrete--I'm just a student with big dreams of game design. I think I'll lurk for a while and figure out what's what.
Thanks for the welcome!
Welcome
If you want to design boardgames, this is the right place to be. And the right time too. Since we've recently switched the site software and design, even the veterans are learning their way around the site.
A few basic tips:
- Use chat for real time discussion of game ideas and other more or less related stuff with fellow game designers.
- Use the forums to exchange ideas, give and get help on specific design problems or challenges, discuss game design theory issues, etc.
- Use the Blog to post personal opinions, ideas, comments, share experiences, etc. (somehow related to your life as a game designer).
- Use the Game Journals as a blog for specific games you're working on. You can have many Game journals, but just one blog.
The Game Design and Getting Started links on the top will link to a lot of interesting stuff to read, but right now they're not functional; we're in the process of migrating content from the old site to the new one. Use the Archive link to access the old site content. Lots of interesting stuff there on the Wiki, the Forums, the Blogs (equivalent to the current game journals). If that's not enough, you can access the old-old forums archive, with loads of interesting stuff to read, here: http://old.bgdf.com/
If you want some competition fun and a great learning experience, be alert for the Game Design Showdown (usually starting the first Thursday every month).
Have fun and don't be shy!
