Pidgin - Blog Entry #1

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

This blog entry represents a public record of work being done on "Pidgin," the tentative title of my deck-building word game. The game is best described as "Dominion meets Scrabble," where players must spell words in order to purchase new letters or victory points. For transparency, the primary game mechanic is credited to Donald X. Vaccarino's "Dominion," and the inspiration for the design came from an early build of Karl Heuer's "Webster's Ghost," which is still a work in progress.

Design Log: Week 1

Began working on some mechanics. I am going to start with tweaking how factions play, and then work on the faction-to player portion.

Point Blank Range (concept demo)

Point Blank Range (concept) game board

The “Point Blank Range” game represents a battle between two land armies from a tactical perspective. The setting is generic so as to widen the possibilities for different game themes/expansions (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia). The game name refers to the surprise factor involved in the combat mechanics. You will only find out what kind of enemy you are dealing with at point blank range! This print-and-play version of the game can easily be set up for 2 players.

Copyright questions

I recently completed designing my first game. I've done a bit of playtesting with some friends and it's gone over very well. I'm interested in getting feedback from a different community than my own but I'm concerned about revealing too much of the mechanics and game play to strangers for fear of having them copied. Is this a valid concern? Is it as much of a concern when sending prototypes to game companies?

Design Log (no name) - Introduction

This blog is meant to be a collection of ideas for a game I am trying to "design." I do not intend to turn this into a money-making product, and will probably make it print and play. Comments and suggestions would be helpful.

So, in order of importance, here are the criteria and constraints I need this game to fill

Living Card Game Concept

I'm very much into card game, specifically TCG/CCGs, and I'm currently trying to create one myself, but attempting to publish and distribute independently may be an issue. But there is a another direction to take:

Play Tester Evaluation Form

Our next game, Oubliette, is entering the blind play testing phase...sending the game out to people to see if they can play it without the designers coaching them. I created a evaluation form through jotform.com to get feedback from the play testers. The evaluation is geared to take them through the entire process from looking at the box, to examining the components, to setting up the game, to playing it and beyond.

I would appreciate the opinions of the BGDF members about the form itself. Adequate? Foolish? Thorough? Intimidating? Pipe-Dream? Let me know what you think.

American Football – Quick Game Rules for Print & Play

Cut out your player figures and place them on their starting positions in the board.

Roll 3 dices on your turn. Advance 10 yards the player with the number on his shirt that matches your dice (i.e. If you roll a 1, a 2 and a 5, then advance the 12 player two steps and the 56 player 1 step). Then your opponent does the same against you.

British Toy & Game Fair: is it worth going?

I have a place at this year's British Toy and Game Fair as an inventor, and I'm wondering if it's worth the cost of going. Do games get picked up at these events at all, let alone from complete unknowns?

I'd appreciate peoples' views on this since I was going to finalise my plans this weekend.
