HOLY CRAP! I found my way back to the fold

StormGate Standard Edition

It's been ... hell, 3yrs at least since my last post. FanExpo 2014 in Toronto was the last time I recall posting in here. I missed this community so much. I've been working, I've been thinkering, I've been building and I've got so much to tell.

First and foremost, I'm heading to my second Cottage CountryCon in Central Ontario (North of Toronto). It's at Rotary Place in Orillia and the show is on June 23-24. I did well at the show's inaugural year, and they are putting it on again. This time in a larger location in the same city. I have 2 just under 2 weeks to get ready.

ADLi and FanExpo 2014

What has ADLi been up to this month of June? Well, let's see. Fan Expo Canada is coming up in August and there is still a lot to be done with regards to play testing and planning. Planning, penciling, prototyping. Memorizing, multiplying, modifying. Sketching, scrutinizing, scrapping. Talking, testing, tracking... and more tracking, and more tracking. It takes more time than one thinks and game design isn't the only thing I do creatively. It's a hobby, yes, but it's a labour of love that I would like to see reach market potential. I'm not ready to go full steam on game design ... yet.

An overview of 2014 for me and game design

I really need to get on this. Been so busy updating Facebook and apparently NOTHING else, I should provide an überview of everything since the end of 2013. Here goes...

January 2014:
New Year greetings and the like. Some ambitious goals for ideas lightly strewn throughout. All was quiet.

February 2014:

Imperial Court - The game of influence

Imperial Court test cards

Working name - Imperial Court
Category - Card game, medieval, trumping, deduction, manipulation
No. of players - 2 to 4
Playing time - Up to 20 minutes
Suggested ages - 7 and up
Languages - English (with proposed French, Spanish, Chinese)

Somewhat back on the scene

Preface: This is just a babble, nothing more.

After a very long hiatus; this including an incredible jaunt through FanExpo demoing my games and meeting with some really interesting designers and publishers shortly there after, I'm kind of back in the saddle.

What have I been doing recently? Well, living for one. Work over the Christmas holidays and rolling deep into the New Year has been tough. Also, with a 2yr old and a wife to live up to it's been tedious to dedicate time, to say the least. Yes yes. We've all heard or lived the same (or similar) story before, so what, right?

Back from FanExpo Canada 2013 - Aug.22 to 25

Holy crap, what a weekend. Last Thursday to Sunday have been the best 4 days of 2013 for me to date. I had decided to take 3 of my game prototypes to FanExpo this year. I shared half a table with another buddy of mine from my creative group TYL United. Preparation wise, I was not as ready as I thought I needed to be. Presentation wise, I had everything ready with regards to rules and prototypes for people to look at and play. Expectation wise, I had no bloody idea what to expect.

Play testing Broken Lance - pt 2

Broken Lance play test - pt2

Working on Broken Lance again. Was looking back through the notes and noticed I had made a comment about hit tokens. Also, setting up a board that has joust, melee and behourd all in the same area. Broken Lance will have 3 games in one. It’s a proper Medieval Tournament.

Broken Lance - Play test part 1

Broken Lance - Full set test

Play testing this thing is a b!&%#. I can’t get over how time consuming and aggravating it is to go through initial testing on my own. I keep overlooking one important thing; what seems to work on paper won’t always work in practice. Theory vs. Practicality — Oh how you’ve kept me grounded all throughout high school.

Broken Lance - Scoring system breakthrough

I've finally had a chance to get to the game again. Sat down last Saturday and spent good 6-8 hours at the work station (aka my kitchen table) working on little bits and bobs for other games. Organizing my assets, creating new ones and just tidying up my crafting carry bag when all of a sudden it hit me.

Word-a-bout progress

I've finally sorted out exactly what each of the 90 cards will have on them. Also, regarding the design, it seems to be that CRAFT (chalkboard card back) is running away as the favourite choice. Thanks to all that have voted and voiced their opinions.

I'm at a little bit of a stand still regarding the buy-a-letter chips/tokens. I've come down to 2 simple solutions:

  • Have matte board w/art printed on both sides, or
  • plastic chips with just a yellow star imprinted on it
