What do you guys think of that News submission about the classes Keith is teaching? Advertising? Acceptable? I'm a bit torn.

Ugh. The only thing more annoying than the "how do I get rich off my idea?" folks is people who pander to that sensibility by bilking those poor, misguided people's money.

That said, I think there's no clear reason why you shouldn't approve it. I mean, it's useless to everyone who's not in Southern Cal (which is most everyone), and it's way too much information, but the title does say "Game Design Courses in Southern Cal", so people who aren't interested won't bother to open it up and read it.

I'd probably approve it, but then, my overall feeling is that in moderation, less is more. A good example is the "spielfrieks" group, which I feel is over-moderated; they crack the whip at the slightest little thing. Granted, the difference here is that the regulars actually keep things pretty much on the up and up, and it's the occasional yahoo that we find ourselves having to deal with.

Well

I believe what he is offering is EXACTLY the kind of information that we need to be posting. I don't think our job is to differentiate what will be useful to our members. Our job is to make the information available to them and let them decide. Especially in this case. He has valid credentials, it is an established college; It's for real! We should be rejoicing that this sort of class is being offered anywhere and we should be hoping that similar classes will be offered elsewhere as well. We support Protospiel and Pow Wow and Chitag and TGIF, there's no reason why we shouldn't support this fellow as well. This is the sort of information our members NEED and it's the reason they come here.

So my vote is a resounding AYE.

My issues weren't with the information, but with the presentation ("courses I'm offering," the prices, "contact me," all the address info), so I modified it a bit. Now it won't take the entire first two screens of scrolling, and is presented more as a news item until you click Read More.

It was the commercial nature of it, as opposed to news, that bugged me. Now it's only commercial if you dig into it. If it had been a forum post I wouldn't have minded the commercial nature, either, but since it would be the primary focus of the home page for probably the next month or so (based on how little news we get)... well, anyway, maybe it's just me.

Perfect compromise. Perhaps in the future we could just provide links to offsite information with things like pricing (I.E. a link to the homepage of the topic at hand). We could let them deciminate the financial aspects of the topc.
