Hi guys,
It seems that some people have been, of late, posting specific quotes that they've received for game production, with the name of the company indicated. I contend that this is not really something we want to encourage. Putting myself in the company's shoes, while they may not explicitly forbid such conduct, neither does it seem to me that they're giving you full permission to broadcast their quote on a public forum.
Matthew didn't, in the previous discussion, seem all that bothered by the practice. What say you, other admins? Do we want/need to take an "official" position on this issue?
Thanks,
Jeff
Matthew,
It's fine by me that you made a command decision; it's my understanding that you are the de facto "head admin" with Michael on hiatus, so when admins disagree, it's your say that should carry the day. No problem there.
However, I can't say that I'm completely satisfied with your ruling; not that I care, ultimately, what the ruling on this issue is, so much as that I'd like to be very sure that we're not endorsing or encouraging a practice that companies frown on, and I feel that there isn't yet evidence on the table that companies do or do not mind this kind of thing. I feel that you, and Lee, and others, have made eminently reasonable arguments as to why it shouldn't matter, but what we haven't heard is an actual "ok" from a company. Personally, I'd like to hear from Delano, or whomever, on this subject, and I'd be happy to send them an email with this question.
In the grand scheme of things, of course, this is a pretty minor point. I just don't want the situation where it turns out that companies really *do* frown on this kind of thing, and the effect of posting this info effectively poisons the well for other BGDF members with that company. An extreme and unlikely case, to be sure, just want to avoid it if possible.
Thanks again for your note, I appreciate it, and I'm very happy you nipped the conversation in the bud, because heaven knows I didn't want it to start up again...
