Chat room troubles....

I hope I don't sound like a whiner with this messge. I really appreciate all the work that you guys do with the Website, and this may be just a quibble, but....

I find the chat room unusable!
I don't know whether it is because I am on a Mac (running MacOS 8.6) or what, but it is very very painful for me to take part in a chat. Following the site suggestion, I run Netscape 6. (Explorer was a complete disaster.) However, the chat still does not run smoothly - the chat room seems to be incredibly slow and jerky; I can wait minutes before messages come up, then either half a message shows up or a couple of messages or half a page gets displayed at once.
It is very disconcerting to try to have a chat where msgs and their replies are so far removed. To make things worse, because the lag is so great, I find that I make remarks or ask questions that were already addressed.

Is this a problem with the chat room or just Macs? I have no problems, or at least not this severe, with other chat rooms.

(Oh yeah - I also get disconnected from the chat room every few minutes, but usually don't realize it until I type in a message.)

As I said, the other features of the site more than make up for this, but I would like to be able to participate in the chats, too.
If there's anything I can help with to improve the chat room, I'd be happy to help.

Keep up the good work, guys.

My apologies

Walkie,

First let me say I apologize for the inconvenience and I appreciate your voicing your concerns. It is true that the chat room and Macs just don't mix well. Since I don't have access to a Mac, I've been unable to perform any sort of troubleshooting beyond what's been listed on the entry page recommendations (spell check anyone?). Unfortunately, the chat program we use really is the best one I've found that works with the site software. I haven't checked in a while, but perhaps I will see if there is a better chat solution available. If so I will try and install it to see how it fares. Perhaps you can help us beta test it.

I'll keep you informed via this thread.

If you cannot find a solution that works well with the site software, we could try something thta's been suggested before... Use IRC for chats.

IRC is a lot more user friendly as a chat media. People can use whatever client they like and set it up so that the chat doesn't steal priority (my biggest problem with our chatroom). And depending on the client, people can have multiple chat windows open for various things- for example the GDS.

IRC is great! Except it's the most insecure beast ever! If someone is willing to host our little chat room on a secure, some what private server, then great! Otherwise I think it's wise to stay away from the giant public servers, as they only invite trouble. Folks have offered to look into getting us a semiprivate server, but they have never followed through.

I like the fact that the chat on the site is 'in a bubble' so to speak. You don't have to worry about trouble makers or off topic chatter from people not from the site. And yes, I am aware of password protection, kicking, banning, etc. To me, the benefits of IRC are outweighed by the hassles it creates.

Fair enough. Is there any way to keep the Chat from stealing priority or focus from whater you're working on? There must be SOME way, but being a techno-ignoramous I have no idea how these things work.

The chat room no longer steals focus.

But I doubt the change fixes it for Macs, sorry.

We only have one participant in our game test that is having any problems, and he has frankly identified his problems as being related to his (PC) XP firewall.. and therefore not a concern for those that are maintaining or establishing the chatroom.

...but, from what I know, our whole gang is working ib the chat room via PCs...

Thanks again for the room gang!
